By the grace of Hashem,
16 Iyar 5711,
Brooklyn,

To the Rav, distinguished chassid* who has yiras Shamayim*, Rav Yehoshua[1],

Greetings and blessings,

I thank you for your contribution to my library, your sefer* in Yiddish entitled "The Worlds of Yore," a biographical work that describes chassidic life during the great celebrations, on Shabbos, on Yamim Tovim, and on weekdays.

Within the limits of my availability, I took the time to leaf through it, and I noted with pleasure the enthusiasm with which these chapters were written and that which they will provoke, in my opinion, in the reader.

Nevertheless, I must point out an error which has also been committed by other persons writing on this same subject and presenting it, as you do on the title page, as "the worlds of yore." Readers deduce from it that it is a commemoration of what has disappeared, chas v'shalom*. Now, may Hashem preserve us from such conceptions. Just as the Holy One, blessed be He, is eternal, the children of Yisroel are immutable. Indeed, "Yisroel, the Torah, and the Holy One, blessed be He, are one."

Now, it is the same for Chassidus*, the ways of the chassidim* and of Chassidus*. These are eternal, and only the place has changed. There has been no disappearance, chas v'shalom*.

Certainly, from time to time, the effort in this area[2] becomes more arduous. Particular strengths are necessary to adopt the conduct and the ways of the chassidim* and of Chassidus*; but our Sages say that the result is in proportion to the effort[3]. They also say that the Holy One, blessed be He, does not expect from His creatures what they cannot accomplish. He demands solely in accordance with their possibilities.

The assurance has been given to us that, in the end, the wellsprings of the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov* will spread to the outside, prefiguring and preparing thus the coming of our righteous Moshiach*, very soon and in our days. There is not the shadow of a doubt that all this continues.

It seems to us that the darkness is, at the present hour, much stronger than in the previous generation. In fact, this may only be an appearance or a stratagem of the yetzer hara*. Or perhaps we have at our disposal the strengths necessary to overcome the trial. The immense responsibility is therefore entrusted to us to gather them together, in order to push back the darkness by revealing a more intense light.

Thus there will be accomplished, without doubt, the promise of our Sages according to which "one who desires to sanctify himself a little here below receives an immense kedushah* from Above." And the one who acts to purify his surroundings will receive multiple aids. Indeed, his effort and the mitzvah* he performs lend him strength, as the Alter Rebbe* explains at length in his Likkutei Torah, in the commentary on Shemini Atzeres, maamar* entitled "May Hashem be with me as one of those who help me," chapter 5.

One will accomplish, in this manner, the purpose of creation, that of illuminating the darkness of the world and thus hastening the accomplishment of the promise according to which "during the evening there will be light, and the night will shine like the day."

In this way, the dimness of galus* will become brightness, and then we shall say: "I thank You, Hashem, for You have rebuked me"[4]. We shall praise Hashem not only because "Your anger will subside and You will console me," but also because "You have rebuked me."

I extend to you my blessing that you may bring the warmth and light of the chassidim* to all the children of Yisroel.

Enclosed you will find the kuntres* edited on the occasion of Lag BaOmer*, which has just appeared.

[2] To lead a chassidic life.
[3] Literally, "the mark on the back of the camel is in proportion to the burden it carries," according to the Talmudic expression.
[4] During the period of galus*, by the sufferings it imposes. Nevertheless, it is fitting to thank Hashem for the elevation it permits.
