Volume 4 · Letter 247 · To: traité Bera’hot 22a ”.

By the grace of Hashem,
21 Iyar 5711,
Brooklyn, New York,

It is known[1] the following teaching of our Sages[2]: "You shall make known to your children the day on which you stood before Hashem at Chorev. Then[3], one was filled with fear and dread, one trembled and was covered with sweat. And it is the same at the present hour[4], in every place and at every moment. One can be filled with fear and dread, tremble and be covered with sweat."

The Arizal* gives, on this subject, the following explanation[5]: "Fear touches the brain of man, and dread, his heart. Trembling marks itself in his inner limbs, and sweat on his outer limbs."

Thus, one who studies Torah invests himself fully in it, by his brain and by his heart, deeply and outwardly. He then knows the same situation as at the matan Torah*[6], at Mount Chorev.

Certainly, at that time, they saw the voices and the lightnings. Hashem addressed them face to face. How could one, at any moment, attain such fear? In fact, to attain it, one must take cognizance that the Torah one studies is an emanation of the Divine Wisdom, that the Light of Hashem, transcending the chain of the worlds, is fully revealed in it. For Him, darkness and light are equivalent; high and low, spirit and matter are identical. From then on, what unfolded then[3] can take place anew, for all this is similar[7].

The possibility and the strengths to obtain a revelation here below of the Atzmus* of Hashem — as it is said, "I am Hashem" — that it should be so now as it was at the time, were given at matan Torah*. The decree imposing a separation between spirit and matter was then abolished, as it is said: "Hashem descended on Mount Sinai" and "He said to Moshe: come up to Hashem"[8].

Each year, when the festival of Shavuos* returns, time of the giving of our Torah, all this unfolds anew, by an effect of the One Who gives the Torah, in the present.

To prepare for all this, every man and every woman among us must commit himself to say: "Naaseh v'nishma" — that is, "we shall do" first and "we shall hear" afterward, as Chassidus* explains precisely[9].

Notes
[1] This letter was written as the preface to the kuntres edited on the occasion of the festival of Shavuos. See Sefer HaMaamarim 5711, page 250.
[2] The Rebbe notes, in a footnote: "In tractate Berachos 22a."
[3] At matan Torah.
[4] When one studies Torah.
[5] The Rebbe notes, in a footnote: "In the Likkutei HaShas of the Arizal, on tractate Moed Katan. The beginning of the commentary relating to sweat is missing in all the editions I was able to consult: that of Korets 5545, that of Livorno 5550, that of Krakow 5647. In the Or Einayim of Rav A. T. Safrin of Komarno, second light, article 'fear,' the text is reproduced without its beginning. But it seems quite clear to me that this is only a printing error. This introduction should be: 'sweat concerns the outer limbs of the body, in the secret of Hashem and the garments...' It has been omitted here, and what follows, 'the outermost garment, among those of the king...' is the continuation of the explanation on sweat. See also tractate Eruvin 54a and the Tanya, beginning of chapter 37."
[6] The Rebbe notes, in a footnote: "The Pirkei DeRabbi Eliezer say, in chapter 41: 'The dead who were in Gehinnom came back to life. All those who would be born subsequently, until the end of the generations, were present at Mount Sinai.' One will also consult the Zohar*, vol. 1, page 91a."
[7] The Rebbe notes, in a footnote: "See the Torah Or, Parshas Vayeitzei, commentary on the maamar entitled 'I shall return in peace,' and the Toras Chaim at the same reference. One will also see the Derech Chaim, on the maamar entitled 'My Beloved is like,' chapter 6, the Boneh Yerushalayim, chapter 106."
[8] The Rebbe notes, in a footnote: "See the Midrash Shemos Rabbah ch. 12 par. 3 and Devarim Rabbah ch. 10 par. 2."
[9] The Rebbe notes, in a footnote: "See Torah Or, Megillas Esther, on the maamar 'Kiymu V'Kiblu HaYehudim'; the Likkutei Torah Bamidbar, on the maamar 'They said: We shall do and afterwards we shall hear'; the kuntres edited on the occasion of Shavuos 5709."

ב"ה,
