Volume 4 · Letter 253

By the grace of Hashem,
22 Iyar 5711,
Brooklyn,

To the Rav, distinguished chassid* who has yiras Shamayim* and dedicates himself to communal needs, Rav Chaim Hillel[1],

Greetings and blessings,

I received in its time your letter of 12 Iyar, in which you describe to me the work you are conducting through the Talmud Torah* schools of your city and through the shiurim* set up for individuals in their homes.

It would be good if you would send here a list of the students of these Talmud Torah* schools and of these shiurim*. You will also specify the name of their mother, so that this list may be read, at an auspicious moment, near the tziyun* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe.

It is unnecessary to tell you to what extent these accomplishments are important. It goes without saying that the effort to multiply these students has no limit and that you can in no way content yourself with the present number, as our Sages emphasize, commenting on the verse, "In the morning sow your seed, and in the evening do not let your hand rest." They also say that "whoever preserves a single soul is considered as if he had saved the entire world."

Without doubt, you are already doing all that is possible in this matter, but one advises zerizus* only to those who, by nature, possess this quality. That is the reason for which I address these few lines to you.

You are surely familiar with the following saying of the Rebbe Maharash*: "If everything is already good — can it not be done better?" The moment has therefore come to guide the students, in particular those of the Talmud Torah* schools, to teach them not only the light of Torah and the candle that is the mitzvah*, but also the luminary of Torah, that is, Chassidus*, obviously in a manner that suits each one according to his level, as is also explained in the sicha* of Lag BaOmer*, which you will find enclosed.

I ask you to kindly transmit my blessing — a blessing of success in their accomplishments — to all those who contribute to these realizations. May there be fulfilled in them the promise of our Sages that "one who comes to purify himself is helped." One grants him the necessary strengths so that Torah and mitzvos* bear fruit in him. You will consult, in this regard, the Likkutei Torah*, commentaries on Shemini Atzeres, in the maamar* entitled "Hashem will be with me through those who help me," chapter 5.

To whoever intensifies his action, one brings increased blessings, one multiplies the strengths, the vitality and the light, in communal matters as well as in personal needs.

I respond to the question that you ask on the beginning of the second chapter of the Tanya*, which cites the expression "from above, literally"[2]:

1) The Alter Rebbe* said "above" to define the spiritual world of Atzilus*, as is emphasized in the chassidic maamar* entitled "He clothes Himself with light as with a garment," delivered in 5672[3].

2) The summaries of the Tanya*, on page 73, say that "above" designates Atika Kadisha*[4], which transcends the world of Atzilus*. The term "literally" therefore seems unnecessary.

3) A letter of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, dated 5698[5], which we will print, with the help of Hashem, when the moment comes, recounts at length how the Tzemach Tzedek* meditated for a long time on these words. Indeed, "from above" designates the highest elevation that exists. How then can one juxtapose this term with the term "literally," corresponding to that which one can touch with one's fingers? Is there not here a contradiction? The Alter Rebbe* answered this question that "from above" designates the ecstasy and "literally" the return toward matter.

In my opinion, here is how this answer should be understood. The return toward matter reveals in the soul two opposite elements:

1) On the one hand, it acquires the character of materiality, can be touched with the finger.

2) On the other hand, it also receives an elevation without any common measure with the preceding ones. Such is precisely the superiority of the return toward matter, in relation to ecstasy.

You will also consult the Tanya* commentary of the Rashag*[6], which is mimeographed, on page 144.

With my blessing for success in your work and for good health,
