You have begun to consider coming here to study at the Lubavitch Yeshiva* and to find yourself among the chassidim*.

In my opinion, you should not make a quick decision in this domain. It would be good to continue your work in the garden, or to take up a manual activity. During your free time, you will set a fixed time to study Torah and you will strive to disseminate it in your surroundings.

Indeed, who can determine what is most important — intrinsically as well as for a particular person? Is it preferable to find oneself among the chassidim* and to absorb their company, or rather to assume the mission of disseminating the wellsprings of Chassidus* to the outside?

It seems to you that, due to this dissemination, you will reduce your knowledge or your chassidic conduct. And this doubt is even more acute if one considers what chapter 9 of Iggeres HaKodesh* says, that the essential aspect of avodas Hashem* in our era is tzedakah*.

Obviously, you must in no way be discouraged from settling here, chas v'shalom*. But for now, it is preferable that you contribute to the development of the Yeshiva* in your city, in the manner that suits your possibilities and your strengths. You will strengthen your state of health in the best way, for example by continuing your work in the garden, until you feel perfectly well.

Enclosed you will find the sicha* of 13 Shevat. You will see in it what was said at the chassidic gathering of that day on the necessity, for each one, to perfect himself, which must be done according to one's present situation. Very often, in this matter, each person is a particular case.

... התחיל לחשוב אודות נסיעה לכאן בכדי ללמוד בהאולם דתומכי תמימים ולהיות בתוככי החסידים:

הנה לדעתי אין כאן למהר בזה, וכדאי שימשיך בעבודתו בגן או בעבודה אחרת - פיזישע ארבעט - ובזמן הפנוי שלו יקבע עתים לתורה ללמוד בעצמו ולהשתדל ג"כ בהפצת התורה בהסביבה שלו, כי אין אתנו יודע עד מה, מה גדול יותר (הן מצד הענין גופא וכן בנוגע להעובד עצמו), אם להיות בסביבה של חסידים ולספוג לתוכו, או למלאות השליחות להפצת המעיינות חוצה, אף שנדמה שעי"ז נגרע חלק ידיעתו בתורה או בהנהגה בדרכי החסידות והחסידים, וגדול הספק עוד יותר על פי המבואר באגרת הקדש ס"ט אשר בדורותינו אלה עיקר העבודה היא בקו הצדקה.

מובן מאליו אשר ח"ו וח"ו להתייאש מהנסיעה לכאן, אבל לע"ע טוב ונכון שיקח חלק בהתפתחות הישיבה במקומו באופן המתאים לפי יכולתו וכחותיו, ויחזק את בריאותו כדבעי למהוי ע"י עבודתו בגן והדומה עד שיהי' בריא אולם.

מוסג"פ השיחה מי"ג שבט אשר בה יראה מה שנדבר בעת ההתועדות אז, בנוגע לההשתלמות שיש לכאו"א, שזה תלוי במעמדו ומצבו הוא דוקא, ולא תמיד יש ללמוד מאחד על חבירו.
