Greetings and blessings,

On the occasion of the time of the giving of our Torah, which is approaching, I express to you my wishes that we may celebrate the receiving of the Torah in joy and deeply.

The situation in the Holy Land causes me much sorrow. Each day, particularly distressing news reaches us, and the dissensions emerging among the Orthodox are particularly painful.

Despite this, I have good hope that in the end there will indeed be a united religious front[3], all the more so since I evoked this subject with Mr. Moshe Shapiro, the Minister of the Interior.

As I have already written, it is, in my opinion, quite clear that elections that would take place now in the Holy Land would be detrimental, for it as well as for the apparatus that it has set up in other countries, in particular in the United States — for example, the bond drive, the United Jewish Appeal, the United Nations.

No one is unaware, and especially not those who reside on the spot, that in such a case[4], a loss is very probable and a gain very hypothetical. It is therefore possible, with the appropriate effort, and even though it is very late, to cancel the elections.

Nevertheless, if it should turn out that this is impossible, it should at least be conceivable to delay these elections. That would be a good thing, and in any event, a lesser evil.

I know that you appreciate the commentaries on the Torah and the sichos* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe. I therefore send you the kuntres* edited on the occasion of the festival of Shavuos*, this year, which has just appeared.

לקראת זמן מתן תורתנו הבע"ל הנני להביע בזה ברכותי אשר נחוג את חג קבלת התורה בשמחה ובפנימיות.

מאד עגמה עלי נפשי מהמצב השורר באה"ק ת"ו, אשר כל יום מביא משם ידיעות מעציבות ביותר, ונוסף על זה הנה ההתפוררות שבין החרדים גופא הוא לקוי מכאיב ביותר.

ובכל זה תקותי חזקה, אשר, סוף סוף, תתארגן חזית דתית מאוחדת, ובפרט אחרי דברי עם מר משה שי' שפירא - שר הפנים - בזה.

כמו שכתבתי מכבר הנה, לדעתי ברור הדבר אשר הבחירות באה"ק ת"ו בזמן הזה תגרומנה ח"ו תקלה לכל הישוב כולו, וגם לכל מפעל הקשור בו בארצות אחרות ובפרט בארה"ב, כמו תעמולת הבאנד, המגבית המאוחדת, או"מ, וכו' וכו', ומאחר שלא נעלם לכל, ובפרט מהישוב על אתר, כי הדבר קרוב להפסד ורחוק משכר, הנה לא מופרך הוא אשר אפילו בשעה מאוחרת זו עוד יש אפשרות לבטל הבחירות בהשתדלות הראוי', אולם אם למרות כל זה לא יעלה הדבר, אזי אם יש אפשרות על כל פנים לדחות הבחירות לזמן, הרי גם בזה לכאורה כדאית ההשתדלות ככל האפשר, והצלה פורתא ג"כ הצלה שמה.
