To the members of the crew and the officers of the steamship Misgav, on the occasion of their visit to the United States,

Greetings and blessings,

I learned with pleasure, through your friend, Mr. Yitzchak Gittelsohn, that you are visiting the United States. Through his intermediary, I address my blessing of welcome to you. I greet you and present to you all my good wishes.

It is quite clear that the goal of your visit, in the United States or in any other country, must be to arouse admiration and respect for the settlement of our people in our Holy Land, may it be rebuilt and restored. In this sense, you will be the example and the symbol of the development of the Holy Land. You will thus represent, in everyone's eyes, the living forces of our people, its most important and most elevated aspect.

Now, what do we possess that is important and elevated in the eyes of the other nations?

Since the children of Israel constituted themselves as a people — that is, since the time of the giving of our Torah, an event we will celebrate during the festival of Shavuos*, in the coming days — they have been the minority among the nations, a minority in the numerical sense. Despite this, this people, since it has existed, constitutes a model and a guide for the entire universe, by its qualitative, spiritual dimension, thanks to the propagation of monotheism, to the observance of the way of Hashem, leading to the adoption of justice and uprightness.

Since the era of the constitution of our people, we have been the object of attacks in every generation. Now, the children of Israel still survive, while those who rose up against us — Assyria, Babylonia, Greece, Rome — have disappeared, without there remaining any trace of these peoples.

What has just been said reveals the secret of the survival of our nation. It does not depend on the quantitative, but rather on the qualitative. It has not maintained itself thanks to physical force, but through the eternal moral values that it has integrated and that have become inseparable from it. According to the words of the verse, "You who are attached to Hashem, you are all alive today."

It is the same for the purpose of your visit, in every place where you arrive. You must represent that which is characteristic of Jewish life, of the essential domain of the people of Israel, which distinguishes it from all the others, being its particularity and its quality. One must put forward and emphasize the moral forces of the Jewish people, show the supremacy of spirit over matter, that is, according to the saying of our prophet, "not by might, nor by power, but by My spirit, says Hashem of Hosts."

With my blessing for a joyous festival and for success in the fulfillment of your true mission and of your moral mission in this world,

בנועם שמעתי מחברכם האברך מר יצחק שי' גיטלזון, על דבר ביקורכם בארצות הברית, ועל ידו הנני לשלוח לכם ברכת "בואכם לשלום" ופ"ש ואיחולים טובים.

מובן מאליו, אשר אחת ממטרות הביקור בארה"ב או בשאר מדינות היא לרכוש כבוד ותהלה בעד הישוב בארצנו הקדושה, תבנה ותכונן, על ידי שישמשו דוגמא וסמל מהתפתחות החיים בארה"ק ת"ו וייצגו לפני כל את מיטב כחות עמנו, החשוב והנעלה אשר בו.

ומהו החשוב והנעלה אצלנו לעיני כל העמים?

מאז היות עם בני ישראל לגוי, זאת אומרת מזמן מתן תורתנו - אשר מאורע זה חוגגים אנחנו בחג השבועות הבא עלינו לטובה בימים הקרובים - הנה הי' עם בני ישראל המעט מכל העמים, המעט בכמות. אבל מזמן זה עצמו, שימש מופת ומורה דרך לתבל כולה באיכות, ברוחניות: הפצת רעיון אחדות האלקות, שמירת דרך ה' לעשות צדקה ומשפט וכו' וכו'.

מאז ועד עתה, בכל דור ודור קמים עלינו, אבל למרות כל זה - עם בני ישראל חי וקיים, בה בשעה אשר המתקוממים עליו, אשור ובבל יון ורומי, סופם היתה כלי' ולא נשאר מהם שריד ופליט.

ברור על פי הנ"ל כי סוד קיומו של עמנו אינו תלוי בכמות כי אם באיכות. לא בכח הזרוע כי אם בערכים הרוחניים הנצחיים אשר ספג עמנו אל קרבו ויהיו עמו לאחדים.

ובלשון הכתוב: ואתם הדבקים בה' אלקיכם חיים כלכם היום .

והוא הדין לתכלית ביקורכם בכל מקום בואכם. ברצותכם לייצג את האפייני בחיי היהודי והקו העקרי של עם ישראל, אשר בזה נבדל הוא, בזה הוא מצטיין וזוהי מעלתו, הנה צריכים להעלות על נס ולהדגיש את הכחות הרוחניים של עם ישראל, הגברתו את הצורה על החומר. וכפתגם נביאנו: לא בחיל ולא בכח כי אם ברוחי אמר ה' צבאות.

בברכת חג שמח והצלחה במילוי שליחותם האמיתית ותפקידם הנפשיי בעולם זה.
