Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1036 — Shidduchim

Volume 4 · Letter 272

By the grace of Hashem,
1 Sivan 5711,
Brooklyn,

Greetings and blessings,

I duly received your letter of Monday of Parshas Bamidbar, in which you tell me that a match is being proposed to you, but the young woman cannot manage to make a decision in the matter. She will therefore presumably come, with her father, to ask my opinion.

You do not give me the name of this young woman. Likewise, you do not indicate whether you are asking my advice or whether you only wish to make your position known to me before the visit of the young woman and her father.

Concerning the question itself, in such a case one must consult many people, find friends and relatives who will advise her in the direction they consider good. Your letter seems to indicate that you do not know why a final decision has not yet intervened in the matter. When you have good news, you will not forget to announce it to me.

I would like to know whether you have a fixed time to study Torah in general and Chassidus* in particular. If the study of Chassidus* was important in years past, it is, at the present time, indispensable, for various reasons. In this case, a long analysis on the subject is not necessary, since, as you say in your letter, your grandfather already used to come to the Rebbe[1].

You address yourself to me for a marriage and, according to the expression of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, this is as difficult to bring about as the crossing of the Sea of Reeds. Our Sages say that the Holy One, blessed be He, Himself constitutes the couples. For my part, I am not an experienced matchmaker, nor even an inexperienced matchmaker. Despite this, you consult me in the matter. How much more must you listen to me regarding the study of Chassidus*.

May Hashem grant that you know success in life by attaching yourself to the inner part of the Torah, which is its luminary. Thus you will illuminate your conduct, you will find the path and the decision that suit you, materially and spiritually.

Enclosed you will find the sicha* of Lag BaOmer*, edited some time ago, with the letter that accompanies it[2], both evoking the study of the inner part of the Torah.

With my blessing to receive the Torah with joy and depth,

Notes
[1] It suffices, then, to follow the family tradition.
