Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1039 — Chinuch
Volume 4 · Letter 275
By the grace of Hashem,
3 Sivan 5711,
Brooklyn, New York,
Greetings and blessings,
On the occasion of the festival of Shavuos*, the time of the giving of our Torah, which is approaching, I would like, by the present, to address my blessing to you — a blessing for a good festival and to receive the Torah with joy and depth.
The Torah is the Wisdom of the Creator, blessed be He. It is "longer than the earth and broader than the sea." When the Holy One, blessed be He, gave it to us on Mount Sinai, He placed it within the reach of each one, and all can therefore understand it, in the measure of their intellectual means.
One will find in it, in the most literal sense, the means of putting into practice the injunction "and you shall choose life." His reward will be considerable, in this world as in the world to come. The Torah will guard him and protect him from punishments, grave or less grave.
Another will understand that the Torah is the guide, indicating to the individual and to the community the path to follow, the conduct to adopt. For "its ways are pleasant and all its paths are peace."
These two conceptions are linked to the revealed part of the Torah and therefore do not represent the highest perfection.
The teaching of Chabad also integrates the inner part of the Torah. It reveals its luminary and its ultimate purpose. The Zohar*, indeed, defines three elements that are intertwined: Yisroel*, the Torah, and the Holy One, blessed be He. The Torah is the deep bond that is woven between the creature and the Creator.
The explanation is, very briefly, the following. Creation was effected from nothingness, and not by means of a cause-and-effect relationship instituted with the Creator, as the teaching of Chabad precisely shows. There can therefore be no common measure between existence and nothingness. From this point of view, no difference can be made between the lowest mineral and the most elevated man.
Indeed, minerals, plants, animals, and humans are all creatures of Hashem. And even the most perfect man is incapable of grasping Hashem with his thought, for his intellect is also a creature[2]. In fact, there exists no common measure between the limited and the infinite.
The Creator is the perfection of good. He therefore wished to offer the creature the possibility of liberating itself from the barriers and limits inherent in its condition, of knowing the highest elevation, not only in its created world, but even beyond it, in order to be able to unify itself perfectly with the Creator.
In His great kindness, Hashem has therefore given us the Torah of truth, and He has sanctified us with His commandments, which permit man to liberate himself from his narrow world, to attach himself to and unify himself with the Creator, as it is said, "You who are attached to Hashem, you are all alive today."
With my blessing to receive the Torah with joy and depth,
