Igrot Kodesh · Letter 104 — Every Jew's Role in Declaring G-d's Kingship — Lessons from Rosh Hashanah

To the refined Chassid*, the Shochet* ...

I greet you and bless you,

We send letters, from time to time, to Jewish soldiers [1]. We send them various booklets, to give them courage and especially to strengthen them in Jewish practice.

A discourse has just been prepared for the military, which is based on the words of my father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita, and discusses faith and trust. It was sent, of course free of charge, to all the Jewish soldiers whose addresses are known to us.

If you let us know the address of your son and your son-in-law, who also work for the army, we will send them this booklet as well and we will add their details to our file, in order to continue sending them our correspondence.

We are sending you, by separate mailing, a package containing some fascicles and booklets published by Kehot* publishing house.

We learned with the greatest surprise that, for the time being, you do not possess the books that have already been published on various occasions. If this is the case for those who should set the example, what will it be for others?

In these days which separate Rosh Hashanah from Yom Kippur [2], also called Rosh Hashanah, particularly profound teachings are delivered to us. One of them is the following.

Every living being, and Jews possess true life, must keep present in mind that Hashem asked us to celebrate Rosh Hashanah, not on the first day of creation, when the heavens, the earth, and all they contain appeared, nor on the seventh day of this creation, the one that Hashem wished to sanctify more than any other, but indeed when man was created who, as soon as he received life, proclaimed before all beings: "Hashem reigns and is clothed in glory. Come, let us bow, kneel, and prostrate ourselves before Hashem Who created us." Our Sages tell us how all this took place.

Each one of us, and you in particular, can, with the help of Hashem, influence the circle of his acquaintances and, through his actions, make them pronounce these words:

"Before the luminous day that will see Hashem proclaimed King of the earth, come! Let us prepare ourselves for this great and awesome moment, through Teshuvah, Torah, and good deeds!"

You should be in the forefront of those who act morally, physically, and financially, to strengthen Judaism, to ensure the observance of Torah and Mitzvot among the broadest Jewish circles. Several means of achieving this are explained in the program of the Merkaz Leinyonei Chinuch and of Machane Israel*, which is printed in the collection Hayom Yom.

May Hashem enable us to perform the Shechitah* [3] on our evil inclination. Then, very soon, Hashem Himself will perform the Shechitah on this evil inclination, as our Sages have promised us.

מזמן לזמן באים אנו בכתובים עם החילים היהודים ושולחים להם חוברות שונות כדי לחזק את לבם בכלל ולעוררם בעניני יהדות בפרט.

כעת יצא לאור מאמר לחילים מיוסד על דברי כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר שליט"א בענין אמונה ובטחון, ונשלח (כמובן חנם) בצרוף מכתב ברכה לכל החילים היהודים אשר כתבותיהם ידועות לנו, ואם יודיענו את כתבת בנו וחתנו שי' העובדים בצבא נשלח גם להם חוברות הנ"ל וכן נכניס שמותיהם לרשימתנו, בכדי לעמוד עמהם בקשור מכתבים גם להבא, וכנ"ל.

שולחים אנו לו בחבילה מיוחדת איזה מהקונטרסים וחוברות שהופיעו ע"י "קהת",

כי נודע לנו בתמי' גדולה אשר עד עתה אין בידו הספרים שיצאו לאור ע"י בזמנים שונים (ואם ארזים כן...).

ימים האלו שבין ראש השנה ל"ראש השנה" היינו יוהכ"פ, שגם הוא נק' ראש השנה כמ"ש בתוספות נדרים כג, ב. (ועיין בס' חסידים סי' רנ"ח, ובלקו"ת בד"ה והי' ביום ההוא יתקע וסד"ה יחיינו מיומים) כמה רמזים עמוקים יש בהם, ואחד מהם:

כל החי - ישראל נקראו חיים - ישים אל לבו, אשר ציוונו הקב"ה לעשות ולחוג ראש השנה לא ביום הראשון למעשה בראשית אשר אז נבראו השמים והארץ וכל תולדותיהם (ב"ר פ"א, ועיין תוד"ה ואת חגיגה יב, ב) גם לא ביום השביעי לבריאה אשר ביום זה בחר ה' לקדשו מכל הימים - ברם ויצוונו ד' לעשות ראש השנה דוקא ביום ברוא אלקים את האדם, יצור אשר תיכף ביום בריאתו אמר והכריז לכל הברואים: ד' מלך גאות לבש גו' בואו נשתחוה ונכרעה נברכה לפני ד' עושנו, וכסיפור רז"ל (פדר"א פי"א, זח"א רכא, ב).

כל אחד מאתנו, וכבו' בכלל, שחננו ד' בהשפעה בחוג מכיריו ומיודעיו צריך להכריז בדבור ועל ידי מעשיו:

קודם יום הבהיר אשר יהי' ד' למלך על כל הארץ, בואו והכונו לקראת יום ד' הגדול והנורא על ידי תשובה תורה ומעשים טובים.

על כבו' הי' לעמוד בשורה ראשונה של עובדים - בנפש וגוף ובממון - בתעמולה לחיזוק היהדות וקיום התורה והמצוה בין חוגים היותר רחבים של בני ישראל (כמה אופנים בעבודה זו מבוארים בפרוגראם של "מחנה ישראל" ו"מרכז לעניני חנוך" שנדפסו בקובץ "היום יום").

וד' יזכנו אשר ע"י השחיטה שנעשה אנו - זה הזובח את יצרו (סנהדר' מג, ב) - יבוא בקרוב ממש יום שישחוט הקב"ה ליצר הרע, כהבטחת רז"ל (סוכה נב, ב).
