Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1042 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 4 · Letter 278
By the grace of Hashem,
9 Sivan 5711,
Brooklyn,
Greetings and blessings,
I have just received your letter of 25 Iyar. You must have received mine some time ago already, with the kuntres* and the sicha*[1] that accompanied it. I will mention your name and that of your wife, at an auspicious moment, near the tziyun* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, for the satisfaction of all your needs.
I repeat what I have already told you some time ago. I do not understand at all the reason for your bitterness and your melancholy. You know that the slightest responsibility that falls upon a man is entrusted to him through hashgachah pratis*. How much more so when it concerns rabbinic functions. It is quite clear that you must be conscious of what is expected of you, but it is just as clear that if this awareness makes you sad or bitter, this is the proof that it emanates from the forces of evil, in other words from the one whom my father-in-law, the Rebbe, called "the little wise guy"[2].
Every moment that you devote to these ideas places you under the grip of the forces of evil. It is said, regarding such thoughts, that as soon as they rise to the mind, it is fitting to repel them resolutely, to forget them, and not to accept them.
This attitude is advocated for all, and each must adopt it. It is integrated into the conduct of a beinoni*[3]. To be sure, the Tanya* says that this beinoni* has never in his life committed sins, while in chapter 14 it affirms that at any moment, whoever wishes can become one. This simply means that, in the situation in which he now finds himself, he will no longer commit sins in the future, and in his current state of mind, he would not have committed any in the past. This point will not be developed here.
You write to me that you are seeking other functions. You will deduce from what has just been said that I have great difficulty accepting this position. You must keep your post, strengthen your bitachon* in Hashem, Who will guide you on the path of truth and grant you success in your sacred mission.
If you have doubts in this matter, they should not bear on your capacities. They are only the mark of a weakening of your bitachon* in Hashem. I advise you to study the "Gate of Trust in Hashem" of the Chovos HaLevavos*, and, in general, to attach yourself to the tree of life — that is, to the study of Chassidus* — to participate often in farbrengens*, with sincere chassidic joy, to be joyous and to gladden others.
You have already settled into your new apartment, and you should have organized a farbrengen* there, as is fitting, remembering the old times when one participated in such gatherings without asking what such-and-such a person would think of it, what the left side[4] and the right side[5] of one's own personality would think of it. One knew only that there was a farbrengen*, that one could, on this occasion, hear an explanation or a good word of Chassidus*, a story concerning our Rebbeim. Thus, one internalized the light, and "a little light dispels much darkness."
Moreover, what good is it to reflect on the darkness? Why not rather think of the light? We find ourselves, moreover, in the period of the giving of the first Tablets of the Law[6], which brought true freedom[7].
May Hashem grant that this new residence cause you to change Mazal*, which will henceforth be positive[8]. It will be a warm and joyous home from your arrival. It will be filled with "the candle (which) is a mitzvah* and the Torah (which) is a light" — with the luminary of Torah, which is the teaching of Chassidus*, the chassidic practices and customs. From time to time, you will organize a farbrengen* there.
I await your good news. I hope to learn that you have better morale and that, in the end, you will have decided to submit to the will of Hashem and, in the future, to put into practice the precept of the Torah enjoining one to serve Him with joy and enthusiasm.
