To the distinguished chassid* who has yiras Shamayim* and multiplies positive actions, Rav Moshe Shapiro[1], Minister of the Interior and of Immigration[2],

Greetings and blessings,

I duly received your telegram. This day, I sent you one in return, of which here is the text:

"I am scandalized by your telegram informing me that the religious front[3] has been broken. Many lay the responsibility on the HaPoel HaMizrachi[4]. Now, it is certain that if the parties would renounce their political interests, this front could come into being. And its existence is necessary not only for the community, but also for each party in particular.

I have good hope that, at this decisive moment, each party will become aware of the responsibility that falls upon it vis-à-vis the community and that it will allow the constitution of this front. In conformity with the discussion we had here, I am convinced that you will direct your efforts in this sense. I thank you in advance for the good news that you will kindly announce to me in this matter.

With my blessing and in the hope that Hashem will take pity on us."

The news that I learned through your letter was a surprise and a very bitter disappointment. Indeed, you had given me the assurance that this united front would come into being and that you would let me know of any change in the situation. I was therefore certain that it would indeed be constituted, despite the rumors that went in the opposite direction. Indeed, you had not informed me of any modification.

I have good hope that you will devote yourself, with all your strengths, to the constitution of this front, even if this requires concessions from all the parties, all the more so as such concessions are, practically, retributions.

I wish you success in your initiatives, and I thank you in advance for the good news that you will have to announce to me in this matter.

You have surely already received the telegram defining the imperative necessity of a religious front, signed by the head of this front in this country[5], and that of Mr. Moshe Feyerstein on the same subject.

שלום וברכה!

קבלתי המברק שלו, ובמענה עלי' הברקתי לו היום, וז"ל: נבהלתי ממברקו מהפרת החזית הדתית. הרבה מאשימים את הפועל המזרחי. ובודאי אם המפלגות יוותרו על רווחים מפלגתיים תתאפשר הקמת החזית, המוכרחת לא רק בשביל הכלל אלא גם לכל אחת המפלגות. תקותי חזקה שבשעה מכרעת כזו תכיר כל מפלגה באחריותה לגבי הכלל ותביא להקמת החזית. בהתאם לשיחתנו כאן בטחוני שישתדל בהנ"ל ותודה מראש בעד הבשורה הטובה שיבשרני בזה. בברכה המצפה לרחמי שמים.

הידיעה במברקה שלו היתה לי הפתעה ואכזבה מרה ביותר, אחרי אשר הבטיחני כי בודאי תהי' חזית מאוחדת ויודיעני אם יהי' שינוי במצב, אשר לכן קויתי בודאות שתהי' חזית, למרות השמועות להיפך, באשר לא שמעתי ממנו על דברי שינוי.

תקותי חזקה אשר כ"מ יתאמץ בכל מרץ להגשמת ענין החזית אם גם מן הצורך יהי' לעשות וויתורים מפלגתיים, בפרט אשר ויתור בזה קרוב לשכר.

הנני מאחל לו הצלחה בהשתדלות הנ"ל ותודה למפרע בעד בשורות טובות בזה.

בטח כבר קיבל המברקה בענין ההכרחיות בחזית הדתית המאוחדת שנשלחה לו בחתימת באי כח החזית הדתית כאן, וגם המברקה ממר משה שי' פייערשטיין בנידון זה.
