To the distinguished chassid* who has yiras Shamayim* and dedicates himself to communal needs, Rav Yosef Burg[1],

Greetings and blessings,

Basing myself on our meeting, in Paris, in 5707[2], and on the memory I keep of it — since the Torah commands one to presume that a man preserves his uprightness — I take the liberty of addressing these few lines to you.

It is unfortunate that we were unable to meet when you were here. I will set out my purpose briefly, for it is unnecessary to describe at length the importance of the stake of these elections in our Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt.

I was hoping that these elections would not take place, for the moment is not auspicious for holding them. But, in any event, the unity should be perfect within the Orthodox world in the Holy Land, so that it should present itself at the polls in the form of a front[3].

For someone like you, it is unnecessary to specify to what extent the good of all depends on this. Each party must therefore renounce the political interests that go against the common good. You yourself are an Orthodox Jew, and you understand therefore that what serves Orthodoxy has priority over all material benefits, even when these are certain — and a fortiori when they are illusory and hypothetical, all the more so since in such a case they may even cause losses.

I am alluding to the united front of religious Yiddishkeit* in the Holy Land, which must exist not only for the public good, but also in the interest of each of the parties. I therefore address you as an Orthodox personality, that you may make use of your efforts and your influence to constitute this front, even if it results in concessions for each party.

I am convinced that the interest of Orthodox Yiddishkeit* will be your first priority and that you will use your influence, each time that this is possible, to induce, on the part of others, the same conduct.

I thank you for the good news that you will announce to me in this domain.

שלום וברכה!

נשען על פגישתנו בפאריז בשנת תש"ז ועל הרושם שנשאר לי מפגישה זו, אשר על פי דין תורה מעמידים יהודי בחזקת ישרותו, הנני כותב שורתיים אלו.

חבל שבהיותו כאן לא היתה לנו הזדמנות להפגש, ואסתפק כאן בכתב ובקיצור, מאחר שלמותר להאריך על דבר אחריות השעה בקשר עם הבחירות בארצנו הקדושה, ת"ו.

קוה קויתי אשר הבחירות בכלל לא תתקיימנה באשר אין הזמן גרמא לכך, ועל כל פנים אשר תהי' אחדות שלמה בתוך היהדות החרדית בארה"ק ליצור חזית מאוחדת לבחירות.

למותר להאריך לדכוותי' אשר בשאלה הנוגעת לטובת הכלל, הנה על כל מפלגה לוותר על רווחים מפלגתיים המנגדים לטובת הכלל, ולמותר להאריך לאיש חרדי אשר לענינים הנוגעים ליהדות החרדית דין קדימה על כל חשבונות של ריוח גשמי אפילו אם ריוח זה בטוח ואין צריך לומר אם הוא מדומה ומוטל בספק, ובפרט אשר ריוח מדומה זה יכול להיות גם קרוב להפסד.

כוונתי לחזית המאוחדת בתוך היהדות הדתית בארה"ק אשר מוכרחת היא לא רק לטובת הכלל אלא גם לכל אחת מהמפלגות. והנני פונה לכ' כלאיש חרדי אשר מצדו ישתדל בכל מאמצי כוחותיו והשפעתו ליצור חזית דתית מאוחדת אם אפילו הענין קשור עם ויתורים מפלגתים. והנני בטוח אשר ישים את ענין היהדות החרדית בכללותה בראש וישפיע בכיוון זה בכל מקום שהשפעתו מגעת.
