Igrot Kodesh · Letter 139 — Lighting the Jewish Soul — Menorah Teaching

By the grace of Hashem,

Sunday, 10 Adar 5704,

To the respectable Chassid*, who acts with self-sacrifice,

Rav Y. Katz [1],

I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your two letters, which reached me at the same time.

You will find enclosed a receipt for the check you sent to the Merkaz L'Inyonei Chinuch*.

My father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita*, asked that the pocket encyclopedia and a daily compendium [2] be sent to you, and his words certainly need no confirmation.

Nevertheless, one can discover an allusion to this shipment and its illustration in the Parashah* of this week [3], which defines, at its beginning, the lighting of the menorah* by the Kohen* [4].

For every time one witnesses a lighting, one can observe that its author brings only the initial spark. Afterward, the menorah* is itself lit, in an autonomous manner.

And it is precisely the same for every Jew. Even if, for whatever reason, he has strayed from the Torah* and mitzvos*, it generally suffices to give him an initial impulse. Afterward, "the lamp of Hashem (which) is the soul of man" and which is within him, burns by itself, in an autonomous manner.

Happy is the man who illuminates the world by lighting the candles that are the children of Israel, by lighting up the darkness of the world, and this merit is yours.

בכ"ז רמז ודוגמא יש למצוא בפרשת שבוע זה המתחלת במצות הדלקת הנרות ע"י הכהן.

שרואים אנו במוחש בכל הדלקה, אשר המדליק אינו פועל אלא הארה ראשונה ואח"כ הנר כבר דולק מאליו ומעצמו.

וככל החזיון הזה הוא בכל אחד מישראל, אשר גם מאיזה סיבה נתרחק

מתומ"צ - די, ע"פ רוב, לעורר אותו ואזי הנר ד' נשמת אדם אשר בו הולך ואור מעצמו ומאליו.

ואשרי האיש המאיר את העולם ע"י שמדליק הוא את הנרות - אלו בנ"י - להאיר את חשך העולם, שזכות זה תלוי בו.
