Greetings and brachos*,
You write to me to describe the damages caused you by the flood[1]. You doubtless saw the letter of the Alter Rebbe[2] to the rav* of Dribin, printed in Beis Rebbe, vol. 1, p. 150. You will also consult Mei'ah She'arim, on p. 36. There is also one of the Mitteler Rebbe, on p. 28, and of the Tzemach Tzedek, in Sefer HaMitzvos[3], p. 228.
These texts establish that after a damage, which is a manifestation of the middah* of gevurah*, it is that of rachamim* which is awakened, and which intervenes then in a more abundant manner than the chesed* that appears at the outset. Rachamim is the middah of Yaakov, the "limitless inheritance," which "goes through from one extreme to the other." It is through its intermediary that one obtains wealth.
May Hashem grant that we may, very soon, behold all this with our eyes of flesh, here below, in the world.

שלום וברכה!
... ומ"ש בענין ההיזק שהי' להם ע"י השטפון וכו', הנה בודאי ראה מכתב אדמו"ר הזקן במ"ש להר"מ מדריבין (הנדפס בבית רבי ח"א עק"ן. ועיין במאה שערים ע' לו, ועד"ז יש ג"כ מאדמו"ר האמצעי - שם ע' כח. ואדמו"ר הצמח צדק בספר המצות עמוד רכ"ח), אשר לאחר היזק היינו מדת הדין מתעוררת מדת הרחמים שהיא גדולה ממדת החסד שבתחלה כנודע שהיא מדריגתו של יעקב נחלה בלי מצרים מבריח מן הקצה אל הקצה, וזהו ענין של עשירות, ויה"ר אשר בקרוב ממש יראה זה בעיני בשר ולמטה מעשרה טפחים.
