By the grace of Hashem,
3 Shevat 5712,

Greetings and brachos*,

You let me know that you have just turned sixteen. You have surely studied the commentary that Chassidus* gives on the verse: "Avraham was old, advanced in days." Indeed, time and days must be filled with a content of Torah and mitzvos*.

Now, you write to me to announce that you are about to be sixteen and to request a brachah*, without specifying what your study of Torah is and the state of your yiras Shamayim*. The essential is therefore missing from your correspondence!

For if you are sixteen, and Hashem will grant you a long life, that is in no way of your own doing. By contrast, the end of Maseches Kiddushin affirms that "I was created to serve my Creator." Now, you do not even mention this subject!

May Hashem grant that you grow, fill yourself with yiras Shamayim, be a chassid* and a lamdan*. You will learn nigleh* of Torah and Chassidus with ardor and passion. Your parents will derive, from you and from their other children, much satisfaction — a Yiddishe* and chassidishe* satisfaction.

You doubtless strive to maintain the three studies, applying to all, that were instituted by my father-in-law, the Rebbe and that bear, as you know, on Chumash*, Tehillim*, and Tanya*.

With my brachah for a study of Torah permeated with yiras Shamayim,

במענה על הודעתו שנמלאו לו ט"ז שנה, הנה בטח למד בדא"ח פירוש הענין של ואברהם זקן בא בימים, אשר ענין הזמן והימים הוא שיהיו ממולאים בתוכיות של תורה ומצוה, וכשכותב במכתבו שנמלאו לו ט"ז שנה ומבקש ברכה, מבלי להודיע מלימודו ומעמדו ומצבו ביראת שמים הרי העיקר חסר מן הספר, כי בזה שנתמלאו לו ט"ז שנה לאריכות ימים ושנים אין הוא לוקח חלק בזה, וע"ד תכלית בריאתו שהוא כפסק רז"ל (סוף קידושין), לא נבראתי אלא לשמש את קוני אינו מזכיר מאומה,

ויהי רצון מהשי"ת אשר יגדל להיות ירא שמים חסיד ולמדן וילמוד תורה בהתמדה ושקידה בתורת הנגלה ובתורת החסידות והוריו שיחיו ישבעו ממנו ומכל ילידיהם שיחיו נחת, אידישן נחת חסידישן נחת.

בטח מתחזק לשמור שלשת השיעורים השוים לכל נפש שהם מתקנת כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע, והם בחומש תהלים ותניא כידוע.
