Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1408 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 5 · Letter 188
By the grace of Hashem,
7 Shevat 5712,
Brooklyn,
To the rav*, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem,
Rav Peretz[1],
Greetings and brachos*,
I received your letter in due time and with pleasure. You inform me that you will soon finish the study of the Shisha Sidrei Mishnah*. Just as Hashem helped you to conclude them, He will also help you to undertake this study once again and to bring it to its term, lilmod ulelameid lishmor vela'asos*.
As you know, Mishnah is the anagram of Neshamah*. It will receive in this way the clarity of "the candle (which) is a mitzvah and the Torah (which) is light," as well as that of the luminary of the Torah, which is Chassidus*. Thus, you will be blessed also in your personal needs.
I replied directly to your brother, the great rav, distinguished chassid who fears Hashem and is devoted to communal needs, Rav Gershon, who had written to me.
With my brachah* of success in the study of Torah, in the practice of mitzvos*, and in your personal concerns,
P.S. I reproduce here an extract[2] of what was said at the chassidishe* farbrengen* organized on the occasion of the hilula* of the Alter Rebbe, 24 Teves.
When the Alter Rebbe arrived at Mezeritch, the Maggid set that his son, the Malach[3], teach him Chassidus, and that he himself teach nigleh* of Torah to "the Malach." Their study began with Mei'eimasai[4], and the Alter Rebbe explained to him the meaning of this Mishnah. But the Malach indicated that this term was to be brought close to Eimah, fear, awe.
One can thus establish a link between the beginning and the end of the shisha sidrei. For during the division of the Talmud that is made here[5], one also assigns the study of the Shisha Sidrei Mishnah[6]. The conclusion of the Talmud is Maseches Niddah, but this remains bound to the Mishnah.
The conclusion of the Mishnah is the following: "HaKadosh Baruch Hu* found no other vessel containing brachah for Yisrael than shalom*" — harmony and unity among all the Bnei Yisrael, as the Tanya* also says, in chapter 32. For "bless us, our Father," is possible only when we are "all as one."
Now, true unity among men in general and among Yidden* in particular is inconceivable when it is not totally selfless. If this is not the case, it does not permit binding oneself to the other, and it is limited to seeking one's own good.
Sincere unity can therefore only be that which is defined by chapter 32 of Tanya — namely, the consciousness of the symmetry that exists among all, because all neshamos* have the same Father, their source being the One Hashem. Chassidus underscores that the source of neshamos transcends even that of Torah and mitzvos. And Chazal* say at the beginning of Midrash Bereishis Rabbah that "the thought of Yisrael preceded all else," including that of Torah, as it is said: "Speak to the Bnei Yisrael."
Thus, the Shisha Sidrei Mishnah begin with Shema Yisrael and conclude with shalom, the vessel containing brachah. Shalom is established by proclaiming the unity of Hashem through Shema Yisrael. But for the unity to be true, one must put into practice Mei'eimasai — to submit beyond all rationality, including that of kedushah*. Various texts of Chassidus permit establishing this.

(1) Rav P. Chein.
(2) See, on this subject, letter no. 1376.
(3) Rabbi Avraham "the Malach."
(4) From when does one read the Shema Yisrael of the evening — beginning of the first Mishnah of the first masechta of the Talmud, Berachos.
(5) Each 24 Teves.
(6) One then divides among the participants not only the masechtos of the Talmud but also the orders of the Mishnah.
