To the distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem,
Rav Menachem Mendel[1],

Greetings and brachos*,

I learned a short time ago that you write Sifrei Torah*, tefillin*, and mezuzos*. I wish to propose to you to do so for Merkos L'Inyonei Chinuch*. You surely write mezuzos according to the opinion of the Alter Rebbe. Can you reserve them for Merkos, and how much do they cost? I specify that they will be distributed in America, and they must therefore not be too large.

As for the seforim* — for example, the kuntres* explaining what tefillin are — I entrusted responsibility for them to Merkos L'Inyonei Chinuch, to which you can address yourself directly.

I thank you for having communicated to me an account relating to the Alter Rebbe, when he was in Orsha. You surely have other good memories from which you could benefit me. I thank you for them in advance.

It is doubtless unnecessary to speak to you of the young man — whose name you do not communicate to me — who studied Torah, for a certain time, with Rav Fluksberg. It would be good to visit him once again and to underscore for him the necessity of pursuing his study of Torah. If he does not wish it, one must find the means to awaken this wish.

I am enclosing the practices[2] it is fitting to adopt for the day of the hilula*[3] of my father-in-law, the Rebbe. You will kindly disseminate them in the appropriate manner.
