Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1434 — Shidduchim
Volume 5 · Letter 214 · To: grand Rav
By the grace of Hashem,
25 Shevat 5712,
Brooklyn,
To the great Rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem,
HaRav A. Chaim[1],
I greet and bless you,
I have just received your letter in which you inform me, among other things, of the marriage of your son, HaRav Moshe Tzvi.
I wish to express my wishes and brachah* of mazel tov, mazel tov, that the event take place in a good and successful hour, that they establish a Jewish home, founded upon Torah and mitzvos as Chassidus explains. You will derive much nachas* from them, Jewish and chassidishe* nachas.
You have certainly received my telegram.
With my brachah of mazel tov, mazel tov,
N.B.: A brief explanation can be given regarding marriage. There are, in fact, two ways of viewing eidim*[2]:
A) Testimony can be defined as the revelation of an already-established fact. One can, for example, testify that a certain person was sentenced in a certain manner before a certain court.
B) Testimony can also be a condition, a part of what it is meant to establish. Such is the case for kiddushin*, which can be performed only in the presence of eidim.
The same applies to the declaration of HaKadosh Baruch Hu*, "You are My witnesses"[3]. Here too, two definitions can be considered:
A) It is solely a matter of bearing witness to what already exists.
B) One must be an integral part of what exists, particularly when it comes to being "a partner of HaKadosh Baruch Hu in creation"[4].
What has just been said has bearing upon avodas Hashem*. By setting aside one's own rationality, by losing consciousness of one's ego, one can become a partner of Hashem in creation, for one then succeeds in transcending it.
This subject will not be developed here.
You also ask me to what corresponds, according to our minhag*, the phrase "all of this shall be permitted to you"[5]. It is in fact explained by the continuation of that paragraph: "there is here neither..."[6].
Notes
(1) HaRav Avraham Chaim Naeh of Yerushalayim. See, regarding him, letter no. 1318. The same letter was sent to several other persons.
(2) Whose presence is necessary for the validity of marriage. See, regarding this, Likkutei Sichos, vol. 19, beginning page 188.
