By the grace of Hashem,

I greet and bless you,

You write me that your spiritual situation is, unfortunately, no longer what it once was. You know the saying that my father-in-law, the Rebbe, brings down in the name of his father, the Rebbe Rashab[1]: "A concrete deed is preferable to a thousand sighs." Without seeking to determine whether your feeling is justified, or whether it is merely an illusion inspired by the "little clever one"[2] in order to weaken your avodas Hashem*, I do not understand the reason for your complaints.

In place of all that, redouble your zeal in your educational activity! This concerns your action toward others; and as for your own person, intensify your study of Chassidus. In the most literal sense: devote more time to it, approach it with more warmth and enthusiasm. If it is difficult for you to achieve this by studying alone, you will surely find in your city someone who will learn it together with you. And it is said: "One who says 'I labored and found,' believe him."[3]

Furthermore, each one of us receives the help of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, who gave himself over to spreading the study of Chassidus in all countries, in all places, and to all categories of people.

You write me that you must conduct yourself like one of the elder chassidim*, while you know that you do not deserve that title. Despite this, you must act as such, for the place where you find yourself, and the people who inhabit it, expect this of you. But our Sages say in Maseches Bava Kama 92b that "if your friend calls you, take a donkey's saddle and place it upon you"[4]. How much more so when people ascribe loftiness to you. You must then do everything in your power to correspond to the way you are perceived. And on this matter, the assurance is also given: "One who says 'I labored and found,' believe him."

You also speak to me of the thoughts that trouble you. Our leader[5] gives, on this subject, a good piece of advice. You must know by heart passages of Torah, of its revealed part or of Chassidus. You doubtless know a few perakim of Mishnayos and of Tanya by heart. All this will repel the thoughts that have no place.

I read with pleasure in your letter that, on the occasion of the hilulah* of 10 Shevat[6], you commented on the event before your talmidim*. The aim of your words was surely to lead them to concrete action in the fulfillment of mitzvos.

May Hashem grant you hatzlachah*, materially and spiritually, and may you derive in particular chassidishe* nachas* from your children,

... ומ"ש במכתבו שמרגיש בעצמו שנופל ח"ו בערך המצב הקודם שלו וכו', הנה נודע פתגם כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע (בשם אביו אדנ"ע) טוב פעולה אחת מאלף אנחות, ומבלי להכנס בעצם הדבר אם אמת הוא או שזהו רק דמיון אצלו ומעצת הקלוגינקער כדי להחלישו מעבודתו, הנה אינני רואה תועלת בהאנחות שלו, ותמורת זה יוסיף אומץ בעבודתו בשדה החינוך הכשר, זהו בנוגע להשפעתו על הזולת, והשנית יוסיף אומץ בלימוד החסידות, היינו פשוט לערנען אפטער חסידות מיט א ווארימקייט און א לעבעדיקייט, ואם קשה לפעול בעצמו חיות לעבעדיקייט, בלימודו בודד, הרי בטח יוכל למצוא עתה במחנו חברותא בזה ויגעת ומצאת תאמין, ובפרט שיש בכאו"א מאתנו סיועו של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר שמסר נפשו על הפצת לימוד החסידות בכל המדינות ובכל המקומות ובכל הסוגי אנשים.

ומ"ש במכתבו שצריך הוא להתנהג כזקני אנ"ש אף שיודע מעמדו ומצבו שאינו שייך לזה, ובכ"ז מוכרח הוא לזה כיון שזהו דרישת מקומו והאנשים אשר בו, הנה ידוע מרז"ל חברך קרייך חמרא אוכפא לגביך מוש (ב"ק צב, ע"ב) ועאכו"כ אם אמרי אינשי בענין של עלי' שצריך הוא להתאמץ בכל הכחות שיהי' מתאים למה שאומרים עליו, וגם על זה היא ההבטחה דיגעת ומצאת תאמין.

ובמ"ש בענין המחשבות המבלבלות אותו, הנה עצה היעוצה מאת נשיאינו הוא, שיהי' קבועים במוחו אותיות התורה שיוכל ללמדם בע"פ, אם בנגלה דתורה וחסידות ובטח יודע בג"כ איזה פרקים משניות ותניא בע"פ, וועט דאס ארויסשטופען די שאינם צריכות להיות.

נהניתי לקרות במכתבו אשר ביום ההילולא יו"ד שבט דיבר לפני התלמידים מעניניא דיומא, ובטח מתכווין הוא בדבורו עם התלמידים להביאם לענינים של פועל במצות מעשיות והשי"ת יצליחו בגו"ר ובפרט בענין נחת חסידותי מילידיו שיחיו.
