Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1441 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 5 · Letter 221
By the grace of Hashem,
First day of Rosh Chodesh 5712,
Brooklyn, New York,
I greet and bless you,
I received in due course your letters of 22 Teves, 29 Teves, and 7 Shevat. You write to me regarding the mikveh*[1]. The halachic proofs and the discussion that you bring forward seem to me to be beside the point invoked by those of the other camp, and I fear that their sole concern is to win a victory. For it is absolutely inconceivable to call into question the manner of building a mikveh established by the gedolei Yisrael*, drawn from various communities, in previous generations. For these, without doubt, knew the Talmud, the Rishonim and the Acharonim, the words of the Sages, of which they assuredly took account in their decisions.
It is a pity that chassidim* are entirely lacking such firmness[2]. It is clear that they should display it when it concerns someone whom they regard as good, all the more so their Rebbe and their leader. You yourself observe that they[3] do not spare their efforts to put into practice the instructions of those whom they consider to possess human qualities. Yet you yourself do nothing to impress upon them the view of a man whose kedushah* is established[4], whose understanding was Divine, whom tens of thousands of Jews accept as guide, down to the smallest detail, in everything that concerns Torah and mitzvos. What follows from this for the matter at hand is quite clear.
You ask me whether you may show my telegram. As you know, various accounts establish that when one is sure of oneself, one knows hatzlachah*. And so it is in this case. I am certain that, had you adopted, upon receiving my telegram, a firm attitude, without feigning fear of men, the teaching of the Rebbe Rashab would have broken all obstacles and would have applied concretely.
But the others spoke out for the opposite opinion, and you yourself were seized by doubt. It therefore became necessary to verify, to inquire, to clarify. I therefore wonder whether you can now display firmness. Your stance might even be negative, for holding an ambiguous position is sometimes more harmful than opting for the opposite position.
My aim is not to deliver mussar* to you, but I suffer from such a situation. Each of us has seen with his own eyes various nissim* performed by our masters, has relied upon them in situations sometimes involving a question of life or death, material or spiritual. Despite all this, it sometimes happens, and unfortunately too often, that one loses one's bearings when confronted with the test that adversity constitutes.
In such cases, one searches for various solutions and suddenly becomes diplomatic. In fact, this is the proof that one is still distant from hafatzas hama'ayanos chutzah*, as Chassidus defines it at length. The latter establishes that, in order to give a little to the outside, one must possess much within oneself.
May Hashem help each of us to put into practice the mission entrusted to him in this world, with abundance. And may He deliver us from constraint and lead us toward true expansiveness.
With my brachah*,
