By the grace of Hashem,

2 Adar 5712,

I greet and bless you,

I received with satisfaction your letter of 22 Shevat, in which you inform me that your daughter and her family have been saved, baruch Hashem*.

May Hashem grant that you always convey to me good news, of yourself and of all the members of your family. It is surely unnecessary to emphasize the necessity of reminding your daughter and her family that Hashem granted them an immense kindness. One can see in this an evident effect of divine Hashgachah*. There is no other way to explain what occurred.

You must therefore, on your part, offer a korban todah*, that is to say, increase the time you devote to limud haTorah* and to the meticulous practice of mitzvos, far beyond what seems to you to be possible naturally, just as the nes* that Hashem performed for you transcends nature.

See the commentaries on Tehillim chapter 107, which constitutes a thanksgiving and concludes with "they shall meditate upon the kindnesses of Hashem."[1]

I enclose for you the report of what I said to the Yeshiva talmidim* on Chanukah. This message is in fact addressed to every Jew, and particularly to talmidei chachamim*, throughout the year.

בנועם קבלתי מכתבו מכ"ג שבט, בו מודעי ת"ל בעד הצלת בתו ומשפחתה שיחיו.

ויהי רצון אשר יוכל תמיד לבשר בשורות טובות הן בהנוגע לו לעצמו והן בנוגע לכל בני ביתו שיחיו. ובטח למותר להעיר שימת לבבו אשר עליו להסביר לבתו ומשפחת השי' את החסד הגדול אשר עשה שי"ת עמהם, שבפרט זה רואים השגחה פרטית בעיני בשר ובאופן שאין מקום לכל תירוצים וכו' ואשר לכן גם עליהם להביא קרבן תודה, היינו להוסיף אומץ בתורה ובמצות בכל הפרטים וגם כן למעלה ממה שנדמה להם שזהו ביכולתם בדרך הטבע שזה מתאים למה שהראם השי"ת ג"כ נס למעלה מדרך הטבע, ויעוין במפרשים על קאפיטל ק"ז בתהלים שזהו קאפיטל ההודאה המסיים ויתבוננו חסדי ה'.
