Erev Yom Tov of Pesach 5712,

To the distinguished man, of generous conduct,

descendant of a chassidic family, who devotes himself

to public needs, Mr. Shneur Zalman[1],

I greet and bless you,

The chassidim*, in general, and those of the Kfar[2], in particular, give me, from time to time, news of the way in which you take an interest in their situation. I hope that, in the future, you shall continue to help them, each time it shall be necessary.

Our Sages emphasize that "the poor man renders a greater service to the master of the house[3] than the latter to the poor man[4]." Nevertheless, they also emphasize the importance of tzedakah*, the necessity of coming to the aid of one who is in need, especially when the public merit depends on it. I am particularly satisfied that you concern yourself with their lot, for I see in this the continuation of the golden chain that constitutes the family from which you are descended. These meritorious acts bind you to your ancestors and to the ancestors of your ancestors. That which is immutable cannot be lost and is expressed by concrete actions. In the present case, the interest you manifest for the chassidim, the help you bring them are channels emanating from the source of Torah, in general, and of Chassidus*, in particular.

I am therefore convinced that, in the future, you shall redouble your ardor in the interest and the help that you shall manifest to the chassidim found in Eretz HaKodesh*. All that lives is filled with hidden forces, and its development is the sign of its vitality. It is unnecessary to express to you my thanks. There is in this only an evidence. And, all that is realized is the concrete expression of these thanks, the fruits that one can see and those that shall appear later.

Furthermore, my close relative, the great Rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem, communal head full of enthusiasm and great scholar, HaRav Avraham Chen, informed me of the help that you brought him, in the framework of your functions, at the Ministry of Education and Culture. I was very satisfied with this, and you shall doubtless continue to help him, to the fullest extent possible.

On the occasion of the Yom Tov and in immediate proximity to it, I wish you a kosher and joyous Pesach. As you doubtless know, the Alter Rebbe emphasizes that the exodus from Mitzrayim* must be daily. One must therefore free oneself from one's own limits and from one's bonds. Such is also the finality of the human race, which must liberate itself and know a permanent elevation, so that one may surpass today the barriers that one was undergoing yesterday, then, tomorrow, those that one is undergoing today, thanks to the preparation of this day.

With my brachah*, on the occasion of the Yom Tov and wishing you good health,

שלום וברכה!

מקבל אני ידיעות מדי פעם בפעם מאנ"ש בכלל, ומהכפר בפרט, על דבר התענינותו הטובה במעמדם ומצבם. והנני מקוה כי גם להבא יהי' להם לעזר וסיוע בכל עת מצוא.

הגם שאמרו חז"ל יותר ממה שבעל הבית עושה עםה עני העני עושה עם בעל הבית, בכל זה הפליגו במעשה הצדקה לעזור לנצרך בשעת דחקו, ובפרט שיש בזה זכות הרבים. ויקרה לי התענינותו בגולם בפרטי פרטיות, שכן רואה אני בה המשך לשלשלת הזהב מצור מחצבתו, עבותות נאמנים המקשרים אותו לאבותיו ואבות אבותיו, אשר ככל דבר של נצחיות בלתי נאבד התובע בטוי במעשים הנה התענינותו במצבם של אנ"ש שי' והסיוע שנותן להם הרי הם הצנורות הנובעים ממעין התורה בכלל וחסידות בפרט.

משום כך בטח אני אשר להבא יוסיף אומץ בהתענינותו ועזרתו אנ"ש שי' באה"ק ת"ו ככל דבר חי ומלא כח עלומים אשר גדולו הוא סימן חיותו. ולמותר להביע לו רגשי תודתי, שמובן הוא מאליו, ועצם הענין כלו אומר תודה בפירות הנראים ואשר עתידים עוד לבוא.

גם הי' לי לקורת רוח לשמוע ממחותני הרה"ג והרה"ח וו"ח אי"א נו"מ עסקן בעל מרץ והוגה דעות וכו' מוהר"ר אברהם שי' חן מהסיוע שקבל מכ"מ שי' בעבודתו במשרד החינוך ותרבות, שבטח גם להבא ישתדל בזה ככל האפשר.

לקראת חג הפסח, בערוב החג, אאחל למע"כ ואשר לו חג כשר ושמח. בטח ידוע לו מאמר רבינו הזקן אש יציאת מצרים צריכה להיות בכל יום, היינו יציאה ושחרור מהמצרים וגבולים, אשר זהו גם תכלית המין האנושי לצאת מההגבלות בעלי' אחר עלי', באופן שהיום נעלה הוא על ההגבלות של תמול, ויום המחרת יהי' נעלה על המצרים של היום, ע"י ההכנות לזה היום.
