Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1517 — Chinuch

Volume 5 · Letter 298

By the grace of Hashem,

26 Nissan 5712,

Brooklyn, New York,

I greet and bless you,

I received with satisfaction your letter of 5 Nissan, in which you inform me of the birth of your daughter. I address to you my most sincere wishes that you raise her, with your wife, to Torah, to the chuppah*, and to good deeds, like your other children.

I was also pleased to learn that your problems for assuring your parnasah* are finding a solution. I hope that this will go on improving and that you shall be able to convey to me good news in this matter.

You ask me what concepts to teach the children who address themselves to you and wish to acquire knowledge. What does your question cover?

In a general manner, all depends upon the nature of the children, their age, their conduct at home. Nevertheless, a general rule can be enunciated, which applies practically in all cases. At the present time, it is essential to instill, in the heart of the children, yiras Shamayim* and the consciousness that Yiddishkeit* must be practiced daily. And one cannot in any way content oneself with a few notions or practice only on Shabbos and Yamim Tovim*, in the shul.

In application of this rule, one must seize every occasion so that the children may and shall know how to recite the brachos*, observe Shabbos and kashrus*. If certain children are frightened by such a study, one must transmit these notions to them progressively. This must systematically be the goal and the objective that one sets for oneself.

Your check was sent and reached us in the days preceding Pesach. I have therefore given half of it to the fund destined for maos chittin*[1], and the other half for our girls' schools, in Morocco, bearing the name of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, Oholei Yosef Yitzchak Lubavitch, for the merit of your daughter who has just been born — may she have long days and good years.

You shall find enclosed a letter[2], destined for all, on the occasion of Pesach, whose content is valid throughout the year.

With my brachah*,
