By the grace of Hashem,

27 Nissan 5712,

Brooklyn,

Greetings and blessings,

I have not heard from you in quite some time. This is undoubtedly a good sign, in keeping with the practice of Chassidim*, according to which one does not write when all is well. May Hashem grant that this be so, materially and spiritually. Nevertheless, I thank you for confirming in writing that this is indeed the case.

I would like to know how your son is faring — he visited me a few months ago. Is he still working at a newspaper? Where has he settled? In Eretz Yisrael* or in another country? In any event, you no doubt make use of the influence you exert upon your son to strengthen that which pertains to yiras Shamayim* in general, and to chassidic* practices in particular.

Some parents are uncomfortable raising such matters with their children, or tell themselves that it will be of no avail, and just as "it is a mitzvah* to say that which [1] ..., it is a mitzvah not to say that which [2] ...". But on numerous occasions my father-in-law, the Rebbe, told me that this is not so. It is certain that an effort is never in vain, even when it issues from a simple Jew, and all the more so when it comes from a close relative, and especially from a father.

Chassidus* indeed teaches that father and son form one and the same entity. Words of encouragement from one to the other are therefore better received and act more swiftly — all the more so since, in this case, they will undoubtedly come from the heart. In fact, in our tefillos* we use the expression "as a father has compassion upon his sons" [3].

With my blessing that you derive chassidic* nachas* from your sons and also from yourself,
