Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1520 — Chinuch
Volume 5 · Letter 301 · To: grand Rav
By the grace of Hashem,
27 Nissan 5712,
Brooklyn,
To the great rav*, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem
and devotes himself to communal needs,
Rav Yehudah Zev HaLevi [1],
Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter, in which you inform me of the bar mitzvah* of your son Pesach [2]. Enclosed please find the letter I am addressing to him. May Hashem grant that you derive much Jewish and chassidic* nachas* from him, in tranquility of mind and body. You have the great merit of drawing Jewish hearts close to their Father in Heaven. Now, the Holy One, blessed is He, acts "measure for measure" [3], and He will therefore grant you immense pleasure from your children and from your talmidim*.
I took note with pleasure, in your letter, of the organization of studies at the yeshivah* this past year. I hope that for the coming year you will further increase the number of talmidim*, both quantitatively and qualitatively, and that you will exert a positive influence upon them, in order to draw their hearts close and to illuminate their soul and their mind through the inner dimension of "the candle is a mitzvah* and the Torah is light" [4].
It is in this manner that one awakens the inner dimension of the soul, as it is said: "Seek My Face [5]. Hashem, I will seek Your Face" [6]. To attain this with certainty, one must study the inner teaching of the Torah. May Hashem grant success to the rabbeim* and educators on the one hand, and to the talmidim* and disciples on the other.
With my blessing that you derive great nachas* from your bar mitzvah* son and have success in all areas, communal and personal,
N.B.: You speak in your letter of the conduct of talmidim* who prolong the time of their tefillah* [7] — an attitude you do not approve of. Indeed, this manner of acting does not correspond to what they do in other areas, and you therefore fear that it is, on their part, only an ostentatious display.
Perhaps your argument is justified. Nevertheless, whoever observes current practice knows that the youth of our era are passing through a particular crisis. One must therefore pay particular attention to anything that could weaken their defenses against the currents blowing in the world. There may be practices that it is premature for them to adopt, in the present circumstances. Nevertheless, since these form an additional rampart against the currents of the street, it would be grave to abolish them or even to weaken them.
If you think that this lengthy tefillah* contradicts the conduct they adopt in other areas, one must, in a friendly but firm manner, lead them to improve those other areas — but not cause them to diminish the fervor of the tefillah* which, in the end, even if it remains superficial, does indeed strengthen their yiras Shamayim* and weaken their bond with worldly pleasures.
Obviously, you must rely on what you observe with your own eyes. Nevertheless, such is my view, on the basis of what you write to me. And we must hope, you and I, that there applies the comment our Sages give in the Zohar*, vol. 3, p. 241b [8], on the verse: "There is no breach and no outcry in our streets. Praiseworthy is the people for whom this is so. Praiseworthy is the nation whose Elokim is Hashem" [9].
