Greetings and blessings,

I have received your letter of the 11th of Nissan [1]. Whoever extends a blessing receives one himself, with the interest of Hashem that exceeds the principal [2]. So shall it be for you, your wife, and your children.

In the meantime you have surely received the kuntres* [3] and my general letters addressed to all [4]. You have disseminated them in the proper manner.

I thank you for the chassidic* stories you reproduce in each of your letters. You will surely continue to do so, and I thank you in advance. You know to what extent our holy rebbeim* cherished the stories of tzaddikim* and Chassidim*. A sichah* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, treats this subject and explains in this way why Bereishis* precedes all the other books, although it is almost entirely devoted to stories of tzaddikim* whereas the other books present the mitzvos* of the Torah [5].

You wish to come on a visit to the United States. You set forth the reasons in your letter and you ask my opinion.

I am compelled to tell you that this plan does not meet with my agreement, for the reason I shall set forth. Hashem has granted you the merit of settling in the land "upon which the eyes of Hashem are always turned, from the beginning of the year until the end of the year" [6]. Moreover, you find yourself in Yerushalayim*, the holy city, whose holiness exceeds that of the rest of Eretz Yisrael*.

The fact of leaving Eretz Yisrael* raises doubts and difficulties. I therefore do not understand why you should override all of this, set off, cross seas, rivers, and deserts, lose so much money and so much time to travel from there to here, and then from here to there, while at every moment, every hour, every day, you find yourself in the Holy Land, in Yerushalayim*, the holy city, where you can receive the light of Hashem in this physical world.

You can also disseminate, in the Holy Land, the wellsprings of the Baal Shem Tov, of his disciples and the disciples of his disciples, in particular of the Alter Rebbe and his successors. There, this activity is particularly important. It is, every day, more necessary, for the darkness, unfortunately, becomes ever more intense. And in such an era, you wish to abandon that place to seek your own pleasure!

May Hashem grant you length of days and good years as well as health, that you remain faithfully at your post, and that you make use of every opportunity and everything to strengthen emunah*, fortify the mesorah* of Yisrael, and disseminate the light of Chassidus*, its teaching, its customs, and its practices, in every place and to every category of people whom you will be able to reach.

קבלתי מכתבו מי"א ניסן, וכל המברך יתברך בתוספתו של הקב"ה המרובה עלה עיקר הוא וזוגתו וכל יו"ח שיחיו.

בטח בינתים קיבל את הקונטרס והעתק מכתביי הכללים ופרסמם באופן המתאים.

ת"ח על סיפורי חסידים שמעתיק בכל מכתביו, ובטח יעשה כזה גם להבא ותודה מראש, וידוע עד כמה שהיו מייקרים נשיאינו רבוה"ק זצוקלל"ה נבג"מ זי"ע סיפורי צדיקים וחסידים, וידועה השיחה של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע בזה, שספר בראשית קדם להספרים שאחריו, אף שעיקרו ורובו ככולו הוא ספורי צדיקי והספרים שאחריו הם במצות התורה וכו'.

הנה מוכרחני לגלות דעתי שאין זה נראה לי, והטעם, זיכהו השי"ת אש קבע מושבו בארץ אשר עיני ה"א בה מרשית שנה ועד אחרית שנה, ובה גופא בירושלים עיה"ק שהיא מקודשת מכל ארץ ישראל, ובענין הנסיעה מאה"ק ת"ו רבו הספיקות והפקפוקים שבזה, ולכן אינו מובן כלל וכלל למה לו ליכנס בספיקות ולטלטל ולכתת רגליו לעבור דרך ימים נהרות ומדבריות להוציא כ"כ הוצאות ולאבד כמה זמן על הנסיעה מהתם להכא ומהכא להתם, בה בשעה אשר בכל רגע שעה ויום שהוא באה"ק ת"ו ובעיה"ק ת"ו יכול להמשיך אור ה' בעוה"ז הגשמי ולהשתדל בהפצת מעיינות הבעש"ט תלמידיו ותלמידי תלמידיו וביחוד של רבינו הזקן והבאים אחריו, באה"ק ת"ו, אשר ענין זה נחוץ שם ביותר ומיום ליום עוד מתגבר הנחיצות בזה כיון שהחשך ג"כ הולך ומתרבה ר"ל, ובשעה כזו רוצה הוא לעזוב את מקומו און זוכען גליקען, והשי"ת יברכו באריכות ימים ושנים טובות ובריאות ויעמוד חזק על משמרתו לנצל כל הזדמנות וכל ענין לחזק את האמונה ולרומם קרן ישראל סבא ולהפיץ אור החסידות תורתה מנהגי' והוראותי' בכל מקום ובכל סוג אנשים שידו מגעת.
