To the Rav, great scholar, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,

orderer and explicator of the commentaries of the Torah,

talented writer, Rav Sh. Y.[1],

Greetings and blessings,

Mr. Bar Lev paid me a visit a few days ago and conveyed to me the third volume of the Talmudic Encyclopedia[2]. He asked me whether I might lend my support to its commercialization and dissemination. After we discussed it, I gave him a letter drawn up in the form of a reply addressed to you, in response to your gift. You will find a copy of it enclosed, and I hope that it will have the desired effect.

Obviously, I will endeavor to assist you, in addition to this, in every way possible.

I confirm to you herewith, though belatedly, having indeed received your letters of 16 Shevat and the conclusion of Shabbos Vayikra. In the meantime, you must have received the kuntreisim*[3] and the letters[4] that accompanied them. You have surely also received the Sdei Chemed. You will kindly confirm this to me.

As for the sefarim*[5], a verification carried out by Rav Ch. Lieberman[6], who was the librarian of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, has not made it possible to find any trace of them. Nevertheless, an address appears in some of them. It is inscribed there that they belong to the library of Shmuel Wiener. Perhaps I will succeed in obtaining a copy of this address, which I will send you. I will then send letters to those whom you indicate to me[7].

I thank you very much for all that you have done, until now, for the Chabad movement in the Holy Land. I was satisfied to receive a letter from the association of Chabad chassidim* and from the Kfar[8], announcing to me as a near certainty that they will be able to form a single group while remaining at the place where they are now[9]. No doubt their settlement will be enlarged thanks to the establishment of additional people. I have written to the directorate of the Kfar, specifying that this should be a priority objective.

I would like to make a request of you. Could you check whether there is a permission or a clarification allowing it to be established that any measure has been taken concerning the government loan, in order to avoid the prohibition of charging interest. You have surely seen the discussions that took place on this in the monthly Ha-Pardes. Nevertheless, the permissions given in that journal are not fully satisfactory.

In order to be able to respond to those who question me, I would like to know whether anything has been done in this domain. Some claim that a general heter iska*[10] was established by a certain ministry, which it has not been possible to identify. I thank you for whatever you can do to clarify the situation.

I thank you very much for having visited the yeshivah* of Lod.

Mr. Shragai paid me a visit, but he came just before the reading of the Megillah*[11], and it was therefore difficult to delay the kehillah*[12]. Thus our discussion remained unfinished, and he was supposed to visit me again, but he did not, and I do not know the reason.

Last point, which is the most gladdening: I read with pleasure in your letter that you are having your books Moadim BeHalachah, a new version of Ishim U'Sefarim, and Sippurei Chassidim reissued. I have seen only the first, but I rely on your abilities, and I hope that your other books also reflect your talents and capacities, that they will satisfy the needs of the Jewish public in general, and of the Orthodox milieu in particular.

You indicate in your letter that you have not been able to complete your books, since you reuse the original plates, and that is a pity. Indeed, since then, you are surely in possession of notes and commentaries on these books. And you know the proverb of my father-in-law, the Rebbe[13], in the name of the Rebbe Maharash*: "If everything is already good, can one not envision better?"

Obviously, if it were possible for you to send me your two latest books, I would be grateful and thank you for it in advance.

I extend to you my blessing for success in your work and for long days and good years, filled with fruitful actions. Now, there is nothing good but the Torah and its inner dimension, which is the Tree of Life by which the Children of Israel will leave the galus* with mercy[14].

ביקר אצלי לפני ימים אחדים מר בר לב שי' ומסר לי הכרך השלישי של האנציקלופדי' התלמודית ובקשני אם אפשר לי לסייע בהפצת ומכירת האנציקלופדי'.

ואחרי השקו"ט בזה נתתי לו מכתב בצורת מענה לכהדר"ג שי' על תשורתו, אשר העתקתו מוסג"פ, ותקותי אשר יביא לו התועלת הנרצה.

מובן אשר נוסף על זה אשתדל ככל האפשר לסייע לו...

אאשר בזה, אם כי באיחור זמן, קבלת מכתביו מט"ז שבט ומוצש"ק ויקרא, ובינתים בטח קבל את הקונטרסים והמכתבים המצורפים להם, וכן גם השדי-חמד, ובודאי יאשר קבלתם.

בנוגע להספרים, הנה לאחר הבירור אצל הר"ח שי' ליברמן, שהוא הי' הספרן אצל כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר, אין סימן על הספרים, אלא שבחלק מהם ישנה כתובת שהם מהספרי' של שמואל ווינער, ואולי יעלה בידי להשיג תצלום מכתובת זו ואשלחנה, ואפנה במכתבים על פי הצעת כהדר"ג שי'.

ת"ח ת"ח לכהדר"ג שי' על השתדלותו ע"ע בעניני חב"ד שבאה"ק ת"ו, ושמחתי לקבל מכתב מאגו"ח ומהכפר שקרוב לודאי שיוכלו להשאר כלם בקבוצה אחת במקומם עתה, ובטח יתרבה גבולם במתישבים נוספים, כמו שכתבתי להנהלת הכפר שעתה יש להשתדל בזה ביותר.

בקשה לי לכהדר"ג שי'.. אולי יוכל כת"ר לברר אם ישנו היתר ובירור שעשו איזה תיקון בנוגע להמלוה של הממשלה בקשר לאיסור רבית שבזה, בטח ראה כת"ר את הפלפולים שהיו בזה בהירחון "הפרדס", אבל אין ההיתרים אשר שם משביעים רצון.

וכדי להשיב לשואלי דבר, רציתי לדעת אם נעשה איזה תיקון בזה, כי יש אנשים מוציאים קול שבאיזה משרד (אי אפשר לברר את שמו ושייכותו) עשו היתר עסקא כללי.

ת"ח ת"ח על ביקורו בישיבת לוד וכו'...

מר שרגאי שי' ביקר אצלי, אבל כיון שהי' זה קודם קריאת המגילה והיתה טרחה דצבורא, נשארה השיחה באמצע, וצריך הי' לבקר אצלי עוה"פ, אבל לא אסתייע מלתא, ואיני יודע הסיבה.

ואחרון אחרון חביב. בשמחה קראתי במכתבו אשר חוזר ומדפיס ספריו, ספר המועדים בהלכה, הערכות על אישים וספרים וסיפורי החסידים. ואף שמהם ראיתי רק את הראשון, הנה כבר איתמחי גברא, ותקותי אשר גם שאר ספריו מתאימים לכשרונות כהדר"ג ויכלתו, ומספיקים צורך של הציבור היהודי בכלל והחרדי בפרט. וחבל אשר כפי מכתבו לא עלתה בידו לעשות מילואים, כי נדפס ממאטריצן, באשר בטח מזמן לזמן נתוספו הערות והארות בתוך הספרים הנ"ל, וידוע פתגם כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר בשם כ"ק אדמו"ר מוהר"ש: צי אז גוט איז גוט איז בעסער ניט בעסער?.

ומובן שתודתי אמורה לו מראש אם תהי' לי ההזדמנות לקבל גם את שני ספריו האחרונים הנ"ל.

בברכת הצלחה בעבודתו לאריכות ימים ושנים טובות, ממולאות בפעולות טובות, אין טוב אלא תורה ופנימיות התורה, שהיא אילנא דחיי דבי' יפקון ישראל מגלותא ברחמי.
