Greetings and blessings,

I have indeed received your letter of 21 Iyar, in which you share the bitterness you feel because of your old friends at the shul. It seems you are discouraged by it, as is your wife. I am surprised by your reaction, for it is a common situation for rabbanim* and communal officials in any vibrant kehillah*.

Among the people who attend to a kehillah*, there are always several views, and it is possible that some are not satisfied with the initiatives taken by the leaders. One must not be affected by it. To the extent possible, one must take their opinion into account, without, of course, compromising on the essential points and on whatever may permit the development of the kehillah*. You will surely yourself find the means of obtaining maximum benefit with the minimum of distress and dissatisfaction.

You ask me whether you should look into acquiring a house. It is, indeed, good to look into it, although it is preferable to move at the end of the summer rather than at the beginning. Hashem will help you discover what suits you best, in what concerns the shul and the Talmud Torah as well as in what concerns the house.

You tell me that you are thinking of coming here in about a month and that you intend to make the trip by car. You will therefore exercise all necessary caution, and you will rest if need be. Perhaps it would be good to stop in one or two cities, in order to undertake there an effort to promote Jewish practice, in accordance with the needs you will observe. For who knows what divine Providence has set in place? And you know the proverb of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, that an effort is never in vain, especially if it is tied to a concrete deed. Without a doubt, such sowings will, sooner or later, cause fruit to grow.

You do not mention your state of health, nor that of your wife. This is no doubt a good sign.

I do not know whether it is necessary to remind Mr. and Mrs. … of their commitment regarding the principles of taharas hamishpachah*, which apply not only before and after a birth, but also now and for their entire life. It seemed to me that this was evident in our discussion. Nevertheless, doubt cannot be tolerated on so important a point. It must therefore be told to them, in a diplomatic but unambiguous manner.

With my blessing for a joyous festival of Shavuos* and to receive the Torah with joy and depth,

קבלתי מכתבו מכ"א אייר, בו כותב ע"ד העגמ"נ שיש לו מהחברים הקשישים של ביהכ"נ שלו, וכנראה שזה פועל עליו ועל זוגתו שיחיו נמיכת הרוח. ונפלאתי עליו שהרי זה דבר רגיל בכל ענין של רבנות ועסקנות צבורית בקהלה חי', היינו אשר בין חברים מתעסקים בעניני הקהלה יש צדדים ואפשר אשר אחדים אינם שבעים רצון מהנ[הג]ות אלו המנהלים עניני הצבור, ואין להתפעל מזה, ובמדה האפשרית יש לפצות את דעתם, כמובן מבלי לוותר על הענינים העיקרים ועל כל אלו הדברים המביאים להתפתחות הקהלה, ובטח גם בעצמו הוא ימצא הדרך המתאימה שיהי' המקסימום של תועלת במינימום צער ואי שביעת רצון.

בהנוגע לשאלתו אם להתענין בדבר השגת דירה, הנה התענינות נכונה היא בזה, אף שלהעתיק לדירה חדשה אין כדאי בתחלת הקיץ כי אם בסיומו, והשי"ת יצליחם למצוא את המתאימה לפניהם הן לעניני הנהגת הבית הכנסת והת"ת והן בענין הדירה עצמה.

מ"ש שבדעתם לנסוע לכאן בעוד כחדש ימים לערך ולנסוע באוטא, הנה בטח יסעו בזהירות המתאימה וינפשו כפי הצורך, ואפשר כדאי שבדרך מסעם יתעכב בעיר אחת או שתים ולהשתדל בעניני יהדות בהנחוץ בשם, ואין אתנו יודע עד מה בדרכי השגחה העליונה, וידוע פתגם כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר, אשר חזקה לתעמולה שאינה חוזרת ריקם, ובפרט אם מצורף לזה הוא ג"כ ענין של פועל, שמזריעה כזו בטח תהי' צמיחה אם תיכף או לאחר זמן.

אינו מזכיר דבר ע"ד בריאותו ובריאות זוגתו שיחיו ובודאי זהו סימן טוב.

איני יודע אם צריכים לעורר את מר ומרת... אשר מה שהבטיחו ע"ד הנהגה בטהרת המשפחה, הנה זה לא רק קודם ואחר הלידה אלא ג"כ עתה וכל ימי חייהם, כמדומה לי שהי' זה בפשיטות מסגנון שיחתינו, אבל בכ"ז בענין עיקרי כמו הנ"ל אפשר אין כדאי להשאיר הדבר בספק ובאופן דיפלומטי אבל ברור להדגיש את זה.
