in Australia, may Hashem grant you long life,

Greetings and blessings,

I received with satisfaction the report of your meeting, in the course of which you proposed to appoint Rav Sholom HaCohen Gutnick as rosh yeshivah* of your yeshivah*. You ask me what I think of this.

In my opinion, it is a good thing, and no doubt he will not refuse this appointment. To be sure, our Sages say that this is servitude and not a prerogative. Nevertheless, they also emphasize that the appointee over the well is named by Hashem — and how much more so is this the case when it is a question of a rosh yeshivah*, charged with teaching the Torah of Hashem to talmidim* and especially with multiplying the number of good talmidim*. Several Jews have chosen him, and he will therefore have the strengths to carry out the mission entrusted to him.

May Hashem grant him and grant you success, so that the number of talmidim* may multiply and that they may rise also qualitatively. At first, and especially in a new country, the number of talmidim* will be very small, but one must not be affected by it. My father-in-law, the Rebbe, transmitted the following explanation of the Baal Shem Tov*[1]: precisely because "the beginning is difficult," one can be certain that "the end will be in expansiveness"[2].

How much more is this so in these days preceding the festival of Shavuos*, the time of the giving of our Torah. Our Sages relate that the children were its guarantors. It is precisely thanks to them that Hashem took the decision to give the Torah. The period is therefore particularly propitious for all this to unfold once more, for one to be able to proclaim: "Our children will be our guarantors" — that is, the talmidim*, who will multiply quantitatively and qualitatively.

With my blessing that you receive the Torah with joy and depth, that you know success in your sacred mission to promote the Torah with yiras Shamayim*,

בנועם קבלתי הפרטי-כל שלהם מהאסיפה אשר בה מציעים לקחת ולמנות לר"י את הרב שלום שי' הכהן גוטניק, ושואלים חוו"ד בזה:

לדעתי נכון הדבר, ובטח לא יסרב הנ"ל מלקבל על עצמו מינוי זה, כי אף שלחד גיסא ארז"ל לא שררה כו' אלא עבדות כו' אבל בכ"ז כיון שאפי' ריש גרגותא משמיא קא ממני לי', הרי עאכו"כ ר"י אשר עליו להשפיע תורת ה' להתלמידים ובעיקר ההשתדלות להרבות גבולם בתלמידים טובים, וכיון שאחדים מישראל בחרו בו, הרי בטח יתנו לו כחות ע"ז למלא התפקיד כדבעי, והשי"ת יצליחו ויצליחם שיתרבה מספר התלמידים ביותר ושתגדל ג"כ באיכות התלמידים, ואין להתפעל מזה שכנהוג בעת הראשונה ובמדינה חדשה לע"ע מספר התלמידים מצער הוא, וכידוע דיוק הבעש"ט כפי שמסרו כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע, והי' ראשיתך מצער, ועל ידי זה ואחריתך ישגא מאד, ובפרט בימים אלו דלפני חג השבועות זמן מתן תורתנו, שכמסופר ברז"ל, התשב"ר הם הערבים שהם החליטו דעת השי"ת לתת התורה לעם ישראל, הנה ימים מסוגלים הם לעורר הדברים גם עתה שיוכלו לאמר, בנינו ערבים בעדנו, הבנים אלו התלמידים, ובמספר רב בכמות ובאיכות.

בברכת קבלת התורה בשמחה ובפנימיות והצלחה בעב' בקודש להגדיל תורה ביר"ש.
