My dear Rabbi!

I thank you for your letters of the 22nd and 25th past. We have no news of our parents. Through a letter from Mr. Liberman we have learned that they were unable to leave Warsaw, and we are very worried about them.

I would very willingly have given you all the dates and places of birth of our family, as you requested, to make it easier for you to obtain the American permits. Unfortunately I do not know them all, except for these: Mendel Horenstein born 1905 in Januszpol; Cheyna Horenstein born 1904 in Lubawiecy; Haya Moussia Schneerson born 13 August 1901 in Smolensk to Joseph and Dina; Mendel Schneerson born 1 March 1895, to Leyvik and Chana Janowska, in Nicolaev. I have written to Mr. Liberman asking him to provide you with all the necessary information, but I find that it would be very useful if you, on your side, would address yourself directly and without delay to him or to Mr. Dubin[2] so that they furnish you with the exact dates.

I also have a personal favor to ask you: it concerns an intimate friend of our family, Mr. Alexandre Rainin,[3] residing in Paris, who asks to have an affidavit obtained for him. He and his wife Sylvia are quite wealthy and will need no financial assistance.

[Editor's note: The following four letters are transcribed from their autographs and were translated into Hebrew by Rabbi Menachem Mendel Pewzner. At that time the Previous Rebbe was under siege in Warsaw; his secretary, Rabbi Chaim Lieberman, was in Riga; the Rebbe Shlita* was in Paris; and Rabbi Yisrael Jacobson was in the United States, from where he worked on the rescue of our Rebbe's home, based on information received from Riga and Paris. These four letters all deal with information received from our Rebbe's home in Warsaw and with rescue efforts. See also the introduction to Igrot Kodesh of the Previous Rebbe Vol. 5, pp. 5–9. Due to the war it was impossible to write the letters in the holy tongue, and they were written in French and in disguised language.

Our parents: the Previous Rebbe and his household. Dates and places of birth: these are the dates written in their official documents, which differ somewhat from the true dates of birth.

Je vous remercie pour votre lettre du 22 et 25 dernier. Nous n'avons aucunes nouvelles de nos parents. Par une lettre de Mr. Liberman nous avons appris qu'ils n'ont pas pu quitter Varsovie, et nous sommes très inquiets à leur sujet.

Je vous aurais donné très volontiers tous les dates et lieux de naissance de notre famille, comme vous l'avez demandé pour vous faciliter d'obtenir les permits américains. ארבע האגרות דלקמן נעתקו מגוכתי"ק ותורגמו ללה"ק ע"י הרה"ת ר' מנחם מענדל שי' פעווזנער. באותה שעה הי' כ"ק אדמו"ר מוהריי"צ נ"ע במצור בווארשא. מזכירו הרח"ל שי' בריגא. כ"ק אדמו"ר שליט"א בפריז וה"ר ישראל דזייקאבסאן בארה"ב, שמשם התעסק בהצלת בית חיינו, ע"פ הידיעות שקיבל מריגא ומפריז. ארבע אגרות אלו דנות כולם בידיעות שמתקבלות מבית חיינו בווארשא ועל השתדלות ההצלה. בכ"ז ראה מבוא לאגרות קודש אדמו"ר מוהריי"צ נ"ע ח"ה ע' 9- 5. מחמת המלחמה א"א הי' לכתוב המכתבים בלה"ק ונכתבו בצרפתית ובהסוואה.
