By the grace of Hashem,

3 Sivan 5712,

To the directors of Kollel Chabad*,

to whom Hashem will grant long life,

Greetings and blessings,

I reply to your letter of 17 Iyar, by which you inform me that you are enlarging and developing the institution of benevolence called "Nachum Dov Denberg gemach* of Kollel Chabad*" and that you have broadened its leadership.

May Hashem grant that, in the future, your action be equally fruitful. The success will depend on the institution as well as on those who contract a loan with it. Our Sages say that gemilus chasadim* is more important than tzedakah*, for it is also addressed to the wealthy. No doubt you also have at heart, in such situations, to help the borrower by providing him with a fixed source of income. In such a case, it is justified to renounce some of the institution's demands toward him, provided that one can rescue him and enable him to provide for his own needs.

The importance of gemilus chasadim* is taught also by the three Patriarchs. Avraham represents it, while Yitzchak corresponds to prayer and Yaakov, who "dwells in the tent," introduces the study of the Written Law and the Oral Law. In this sense, gemilus chasadim* characterizes the first of the Patriarchs, and it is known that "Avraham is great among the giants."

We must identify with the conduct of Hashem, "Just as He performs acts of kindness, so shall you do likewise." May Hashem grant that we may thus have the merit of receiving the Torah, a Torah of kindness, with joy and depth.

במענה על מכתבם מי"ז אייר בו מודיעים ע"ד הגדלת והתפתחות מפעל "גמ"ח קרן נחום דוב דענבערג שע"י כ"ח" ובחרו בהנהלה מורחבת, הנה יה"ר מהשי"ת אשר תהי' עבודתם גם מכאן ולהבא בהצלחה, ובהצלחה הן מצד המפעל והן מצד הלוים, וכמרז"ל גדולה גמ"ח יותר מן הצדקה, שגמ"ח הוא גם לעשירים, ובטח שמים לב ביחוד לעזר במקרים כאלו שעוזרים להלוה לסדר מקור פרנסה קבוע, אשר אז כדאי לוותר על איזה מדרישת המפעל מאת הלוה, ובלבד להושיט עזר להעשות לחי מפרנס את עצמו.

ומובן גודל ערך הגמ"ח גם מזה, ששלשת האבות שאברהם הוא בקו הגמ"ח ויצחק קו העבודה ויעקב יושב אהלים תורה שבכתב ותושבע"פ, הנה הראשון בהם הענין דגמ"ח, אברהם הגדול בענקים, ויה"ר מהשי"ת אשר ע"י שנדבק בדרכיו שמה הוא ג"ח אף אתה גמ"ח הנה נזכה לקבל את התורה תורת חסד בשמחה ובפנימיות.
