Greetings and blessings,

You complain about your moral state. You surely know the saying that my father-in-law, the Rebbe, transmitted in the name of his father:[1] "One action is preferable to a thousand complaints."

To speak simply, it is enough to complain; one must now act. Logic allows us to establish that this must be so. First of all, complaining is harmful to one's health, and the Rambam, in his Hilchos Deos*, at the beginning of chapter 4, writes that "having a healthy body is an act of the service of Hashem."

There is also another negative effect.[2] By complaining, one has the impression of having "done a favor" for Hashem, of having truly attained teshuvah*, and of being able henceforth to go and rest. One can understand to what extent such a conception is damaging for His service.

In contrast to all of this, an action, however limited it may be, does introduce an accomplishment. Each act, even of spiritual scope, strengthens the health of a Jew, also in a physical manner. Its effect therefore goes precisely in the opposite direction from the consequences of complaint described above, which are without utility.

... בנוגע לו לעצמו שמתאונן על מצבו הרוחני, בטח שמע הפתגם שהי' אומר כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר בשם כ"ק אביו, "טובה פעולה אחת מאלף אנחות" פשוט גערעט, גענוג צו קרעכצען און מער געטאן, ומובן זה ג"כ ע"פ שכל, שאנחה הנה ראשית מזקת היא להבריאות, והרמב"ם בהלכות דיעות רפ"ד כותב, שהיות הגוף בריא מדרכי השם הוא, ועוד גרעון - שלאחר האנחה נדמה לו שכבר עשה טובה להקב"ה במה שהתאנח ד"עשה תשובה", ובמילא כבר יכולים לילך לנוח, ומובן ההיזק שמביא זה בעבודה, משא"כ מפעולה אחת, איך שלא תהי' קטנה, הנה נפעל מה, ומכל פעולה אפי' ברוחניות אצל יהודי נתוסף בריאות גם בגשמיות, במילא הנה זהו היפך ענין התוצאות הנ"ל מאנחות לא תועלת.

בברכה שיבשר מפעולות טובות ובשו"ט גם בעניניו הפרטיים.
