To the great Rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem,
Rav Sholom,[1]

Greetings and blessings,

I received your letter of 20 Sivan, and the Rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to the needs of the community, Rav Ch. M. A. Hodakov,[2] transmitted to me the content of what you wrote to him. I was happy to note that you finally recognize the fruitful character of your work. May Hashem help you to see it still more clearly, and with your eyes of flesh.

You tell me that it is finished, that one single boy is your reward for all your effort. But you yourself give the answer afterward, when you say that you hope to come here, with several of your students,[3] for 12 Tammuz.[4]

You also question me about the missionaries. In my opinion, there is no reason to engage in a discussion with them on the basis of logic. One must seek the means of publicly bringing to light what they are, the manner in which they deceive people, do not reveal their true identity, do not say that they turn others away from the right path. One must also specify that their approach is self-interested.

It seems to me that there is, in the periodical Jewish Life of Iyar-Sivan, an article on their activities in the Bronx.[5] This may perhaps be useful to you.

It has happened a few times that, in seeking to deceive people, these persons were led to consult their priests and to disseminate their opinion publicly. Indeed, these priests oppose the lies and the deception that are the characteristics of the missionaries. But one must first know what form their deception takes. In fact, they have recourse to falsehood almost systematically.

קבלתי מכתבו מכ' סיון, וכן בשעתו מסר לי הרה"ח הוו"ח אי"א נו"נ עוסק בצ"צ וכו' מוהרחמ"א שי' חדקוב תוכן מכתבו אליו, ושמחתי אשר סו"ס גם הוא מודה שעבודתו עושה פרי, ויעזרהו השי"ת לראות את זה בתוספת וגם בעיני בשר.

במ"ש שזהו, היינו נער יחידי חלקו מכל עמלו, הנה תיכף לזה שוברו בצדו שכותב אשר תקותו לבוא לכאן עם איזה מתלמידיו לי"ב תמוז הבע"ל.

בנוגע לשאלתו אודות המיסיאנערן, הנה לדעתי אין כדאי להכנס עמהם בוויכוחים ע"פ שכל, אלא שצריך לחפש דרכים המתאימים לגלות את קלונם בפרסום רב, היינו שמרמים הם את הבריות, אינם מגלים א"ע שהם מסיתים ומדיחים וכן שעושים את זה בעד קבלת פרס וכו' וכו' וכמדומה שבירחון דזשואיש לייף מחדש אייר-סיון נדפס מאמר ע"ד פעולותיהם בבראנקס שאפשר יביא גם לו תועלת.

קרה לפעמים שכאשר רימו הנ"ל את הבריות שאלו עד"ז באופן רשמי אצל הכומרים, ומוכרחים היו לפרסם דעתם בקהל, שאין הם הכומרים מסכימים מצדם לדרכי השקר והרמי' שאחזו בהם המיסיאנערן, אלא שצריך לברר מקודם במה הוא ענין הרמי' שלהם, וכמעט תמיד יש איזה פרט שמרמים הם בדברי שקר וכיו"ב...
