By the grace of Hashem,

7 Tammuz 5712,

May great peace be granted to this important man,

the great Rav, chassid who fears Hashem, renders judgment,

leads his community with uprightness, a man of zeal,

increasing positive deeds, of great splendor,

Rav Refael Baruch[1] shlita,

I extend to you greetings without end and blessings without limit,

Thank you very much for kindly receiving the great Rav, chassid who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Sholom Chaskind[2]. I was happy to receive from him a letter in which he tells me that he exchanged words of Torah with you.

May Hashem grant each of us his portion in His Torah, to glorify and magnify it, with tranquility of mind and body, in true expansiveness.

I ask your forgiveness for not having responded to your letter of 24 Iyar and the previous one. I drove a stake into a sure place[3], for our Sages say that "one does not respond to insult"[4]. For the situation here is such that there is little hope, to our pain and sorrow, of organizing protest gatherings against the wrongs done to children from religious families by those who wish to draw them away from our holy Torah, chas veshalom*[5].

For this situation is well known here, and for various reasons it has been impossible until now, despite our efforts, to alert public opinion to obtain the protest that is called for.

For the moment, then, it seems that there is nothing else to do but to convince the parents on the spot[6] to protest vehemently against those who attack the souls of their children and wish to separate them from the living waters, from the living Hashem and from the Torah of life, chas veshalom*. May Hashem protect His people Israel wherever they are. May He illuminate the darkness of golus* until the coming of our Moshiach*, the righteous redeemer, very soon and in our days.

With my great blessing for you, for your teaching and for those who benefit from it,

Rav Sh. Chaskind transmitted to me the names of the organizations and associations here that he communicated to you so that you may inform them of this situation. Perhaps, by addressing yourself to them directly, you may be helped somewhat, inasmuch as they have not yet had direct contact with you[7]. For you are a Rav leading the community of a great city, and your name is well known.

[4] Rav Toledano was asking the Rebbe's help to rescue children originally from Morocco who had immigrated to the Holy Land and whose parents had remained in Morocco. There the Zionist authorities were trying by every means to draw them away from Jewish practice. But the Rebbe, seeing that nothing could be done to remedy this situation, indicates that in such a case, "one does not respond to insult."

לשלום אין קץ וברכה עד בלי די.

תשואות חן לכהדר"ג שליט"א עבור קבלו את הרה"ג והרה"ח וו"ח אי"א עוסק בצ"צ וכו' מוהר"ר שלום נ"י חסקינד בסבר פנים יפות, ונהניתי לקבל מכתב משלוחי הנ"ל אשר פלפל את כת"ר בדברי תורה,

כן יתן השי"ת לכל אחד ואחד מאתנו את חלקנו בתורתו להגדיל תורה ולהאדירה, מתוך מנוחת הנפש ומנוחת הגוף בהרחבה אמתית.

את כהדר"ג הסליחה שלא עניתי למכתבו מכ"ד אייר והקודם לו, ותקעתי יתד במקום נאמן במרז"ל אין משיבין על הקלקלה. כי לפי המצב פה, הנה לדאבוננו ולצערנו אין תקוה גדולה להזעיק אסיפות ומחאות על העול הנעשה להילדים בני הורים דתיים על ידי אלו שרוצים להפרידם ח"ו מתורתנו הק', כי מצב זה ידוע כאן למדי, ומפני כמה סיבות אי אפשר הי' עד עתה להזיז את דעת הקהל שיצאו במחאה מתאימה, אף שהשתדלנו בזה.

ולעת עתה אין דרך אחרת, לכאורה, אלא להשפיע על ההורים על אתר שהם יגיבו במחאה חריפה נגד אלו הקמים על נפש בניהם ובנותיהם להפרידם, הי' לא תהי', ממקור מים חיים אלקים חיים ותורת חיים. וה' יגן על עמו ישראל בכל מקום שהם, ויאיר את חשכת הגלות עד בא משיחנו גואל צדק במהרה בימינו.

בברכה מרובה למר ולתורתו והמסתופפים בצלו.

כתב לי הרב מהר"ש שי' חסקינד את שמות האגודות והחברות כאן שמסר לכהדר"ג בקשר להנ"ל, וכולא האי ואולי, אם יפנה ישר אליהם, אולי תהי' עכ"פ הצלה פורתא כיון שבא הדבר מפנים חדשות, מרב ומנהל עדתו בעיר רבתי, אשר שמו הולך וכו' וכו'.
