Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1716 — Bas Mitzvah

By the grace of Hashem,

21 Tammuz 5712,

Brooklyn,

I bless and greet you,

In reply to your letter, in which you inform me that you have just turned twelve.

You surely know that, from this age, you are obligated in the practice of mitzvos*. Our Sages say that "binah yeseirah nittenah lenashim—women have been granted greater discernment." That is why the "bas mitzvah" of a girl occurs one year before the bar mitzvah* of a boy.

May Hashem cause you to develop, to acquire knowledge, to have judicious conduct, and may your parents have Jewish and chassidic nachas* from you and from their other children.

You are surely making the effort to exercise a positive influence upon those around you, to instill in them the enthusiasm of yiras Shamayim* and Chassidus*. This will be the channel and an additional receptacle for receiving Hashem's blessings.

במענה על מכתבה, בו מודיעה אשר נתמלאו לה שתים עשרה שנה:

הנה בטח יודעת היא אשר בגיל זה נעשית מחוייבת במצות, וכמרז"ל בינה יתירה ניתנה באישה, אשר לכן ה"בר מצוה" של בנות ישראל היא שנה קודם להבר מצוה של בני ישראל, ויתן השי"ת שתגדל מעלה מעלה בידיעות והנהגה ישרה והורי' שיחיו ירוו ממנה ומשאר ילידיהם שיחיו, אידישן נחת חסידישן נחת.

בטח משתדלת גם כן להשפיע על סביבתה להחדיר בה חום של יראת שמים

וחסידות, אשר זהו גם כן צנור וכלי נוסף לקבלת ברכות השי"ת.
