Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1739 — Chinuch
Volume 6 · Letter 212 · To: distingué ‘Hassid qui craint D.ieu
By the grace of Hashem,
27 Tammuz 5712,
Brooklyn,
To the distinguished chassid who fears Hashem,
Rav Mordechai[1],
Greetings and blessings,
I duly received your letter of 20 Tammuz, asking me to send you mezuzos*, tefillin* straps and tzitzis*. I conveyed this to the directors of the Merkaz LeInyanei Chinuch*, who will send them to you as soon as possible.
You tell me that you still have difficulty obtaining a Canadian visa. This is precisely the proof that you have not yet completed your mission of strengthening Yiddishkeit*, Torah and mitzvos* in the place where you currently find yourself.
You know what my father-in-law relates in the name of his grandfather, the Rebbe Maharash[2]. As he explained at length to someone, Hashem could have arranged that every Jew earn his livelihood within an important community made up of people who observe Torah and mitzvos*. When a Jew receives his sustenance in an isolated place, he must therefore deduce, without the slightest doubt, that a mission has been entrusted to him there. He must strengthen Jewish values there—"the candle that is a mitzvah and the Torah that is light"—among all who find themselves there.
It is precisely for this reason that such a person is granted the means to make his livelihood in that place. Thus, his nefesh habahamis* and his body will accept going there, in order that the spiritual mission entrusted to that person may be brought to its completion.
You will find enclosed the report of the words I addressed to the talmidim* of the yeshivah*, who will be visiting in a few weeks the American cities[3], to strengthen there Jewish observance, Torah and mitzvos*. In fact, these words are addressed to all those who find themselves in an isolated place where they cannot satisfy all their spiritual needs and, more generally, to all Yidden.
For every soul, emanating from the heavenly Throne, descends here below to enter into a body, to satisfy material needs, undergo various trials and meet many difficulties. This entire process must result in an elevation.
I hope you will know success in the spiritual mission entrusted to you. It is in this way that your material needs will also be fruitfully satisfied.
P.S.: Your participation has been transmitted to the fund that supports the talmudei Torah* and yeshivos* bearing the name of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, Oholei Yosef Yitzchok Lubavitch, in our Holy Land and in Africa[4].
