Greetings and blessings,

I received with pleasure your letters written at the conclusion of Shabbos Mattos-Masei. I confirm to you that the first two volumes of the Talmudic Encyclopedia, which were sent to me these past few days by the Sifrei Yisroel publishing house, at the request of Mr. Bar Lev, have indeed just reached me. I thank you very much for them.

I have not even had the time to leaf through them, but I will nevertheless formulate two general remarks, for which you will kindly excuse me, all the more so since I am not sure that their content depends on you:

A) An encyclopedia in general, and that of the Talmud in particular, must be a regularly used sefer*. For when it bears on the Talmud, it is commonly used by the talmidim* of the yeshivos*, who devote themselves to study and whose primary preoccupation is not to take care of the sefarim* they use. It is therefore important that the encyclopedia be printed on very solid paper, which is not the case with the present edition.

B) If you added to the encyclopedia illustrations, tables and maps, it would gain in clarity in various areas. Moreover, one would thus spare the pain that is alluded to in Lecha Dodi[2], in observing that the books published by the negative forces are "built upon their original site"[3], whereas the holy sefarim*...[4].

The tenth volume of Sdei Chemed has not yet appeared, for I lack the time to verify, even rapidly, how the index has been compiled. In addition to the approbations and the pamphlets already published in the previous appearances, there has been added to this tenth volume a general index, in alphabetical order, which will take up both the entries treated in the general chapters and those that figure in the collection of laws, for I do not know whether the author himself had a criterion of classification to which he adhered. There will also be found there an index of authors and another of sefarim*. Obviously, this sefer* will be sent to you upon its appearance.

You have surely received my letter with the copy of what I wrote to Mr. Shazar. I await a detailed reply concerning him.

I learned with pleasure that you took part in the chassidic farbrengen* of 12 and 13 Tammuz. No doubt you will do likewise in the future. May Hashem grant you success in leading toward Torah and yiras shamayim* those who listen to you and your readers.

I inquired of you about the documents for the state loan[5]. I was, of course, alluding to the documents found in the United States.

As for the registrations[6], it appears, from the information I have obtained from chassidim, that a certain number—and perhaps even the majority—of the forms has been torn up or annulled[7], under various pretexts. And one knows that amatla, pretext, can be broken into emes lo, which is not the truth. This corresponds in no way to what Mr. Shazar promised me when he was here.

I enclose a collection of addenda to the notes on Megillas Eichah*, which has appeared in recent days.

בנועם הנני מאשר קבלת מכתביו ממוצש"ק מטו"מ ומאשר הנני בזה שקבלתי ימים אלו את שני הכרכים הראשונים דאנציקלופדי' תלמודית "מביה"ס "ספרי ישראל" עפ"י פקודת מר בר-לב". ות"ח ת"ח ע"ז, ואף שלא הספיק לי הזמן אפילו לדפדף בהם, הנה שתי הערות כלליות הנני להעיר בזה ואתו הסליחה, אף שחוששני שאין הדבר תלו[י] בכה[ד]ר"ג שי', והן:

א) כיון שאנציקלופדי' בכלל ותלמודית בפרט, תפקידה להיות ספר שמושי. ובפרט תלמודית הרי ממשמשים בה בני הישיבה ועוסקים בתורה, שאינם נזהרים כ"כ בשמירת דפי ספר, הרי מוכרח שהנייר עליו נדפסה האנציקלופדי', צ"ל חזק ביותר, ואינו מקבל כתמים כ"כ, משא"כ באנציק' זו.

ב) אם היו נתוספים בהאנציקלופדי' ציורים תרשימים ומפות, הי' זה מביא בהירות בכמה ענינים. ונוסף ע"ז, לא הי' מכאיב, ע"ד האמור ב"לכה דודי", שהספרים דלעו"ז על תלם בנוים וספרי הקדש וכו'.

הכרך העשירי של השדי חמד עדיין לא הופיע, מפני העדר הפנאי שלי לעבור, עכ"פ בשטחיות, על אופן סידור המפתחות וכו' - כי נוסף על ההסכמות וקונטרסים השונים (שכבר נדפסו בשדי חמד שמאז), הנה נערכו בכרך העשירי: מפתח כללי ע"ס הא"ב של הערכים (שבו יהיו מעורבים הערכים הבאים במע' הכללים ואלו שבאסיפת דינים. כי מסופקני אם להמחבר בעצמו היתה שיטה מסויימת בחילוקם, און א דורכגעהאלטענע), וכן מפתח המחברים, והספרים. ומובן שכ[ש]יו"ל יושלח לכהדר"ג שי'.

בטח קבל מכתבי בצירוף העתק מכתבי למר שז"ר שי'. ואחכה למענה מפורטה עליו.

נעים לי לקרות מהשתתפותו בההתועדות די"ב וי"ג תמוז, ובטח גם להבא יהי' זה.

והשי"ת יצליחו לעורר את שומעיו וקוראי ספריו לתורה ויראה.

מה ששאלתי אודות ניירות מלוה הממשלה, הנה כוונתי היתה אל אותם הניירות שבאה"ב, כמובן.

בנוגע להרישום, הנה, כפי הידיעות שקבלתי מאנ"ש, הרי כנראה שקרעו ובטלו באמתלאות שונות (וידוע הפי' אמתלא אמת-לא) כמה וכמה מטופסי הרישום (כנראה - רובם). ואין זה מתאם כלל וכלל למה שאמר לי מר שז"ר שי' בהיותו כאן.
