Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1829 — Prayer

Greetings and blessings,

I received with pleasure your letter of Tuesday of Parshas Shoftim. I was already a little worried, not having had your news for a long time.

You announce to me the bar mitzvah of your son and I address to you, in this regard, my brachah*. Having thirteen years, the age at which one is bound to the practice of mitzvos, he will reach fifteen years, when one accedes to the study of Gemara. You and your wife will conceive from him much satisfaction, a Jewish and chassidic satisfaction.

You know the affirmation of our Sages, according to which "he who tells you he has furnished efforts and has known success, believe him. He who tells you he has furnished no effort and has nevertheless known success, do not believe him." You therefore have the merit and the obligation to do all that is in your power so that your son be a chassid*. To engage himself in this direction, he will have to "exile himself to a place of Torah," that is, pursue his studies in a yeshivah* where one studies Torah with yiras shamayim*.

You conclude your letter by indicating that you are also a chazzan*. It is surely unnecessary to remind you of the positive practice of Yidden — and even of the Great ones of our people assuming such a function — which consists in reviewing, before Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, the prayers and the songs, with the meaning of these texts and a few midrashim* of our Sages.

Moreover, you write me that you come from an illustrious family, and you describe to me, in your letter, your relation with the Chozeh of Lublin. You must therefore study also commentaries which are given in the spirit of Chassidus*.

בנועם קבלתי מכתבו מיום ג' שופטים - אשר כבר דאגתי במקצת שזמן רב לא קבלתי ממנו כל ידיעה -

ולקראת הודעתו מהבר מצוה של בנו... שי', הנני בזה לברכו שמבן שלש עשרה למצות יגדל לבן חמש עשרה לגמרא וכו' והוא וזוגתו שיחיו יקבלו ממנו רוב נחת, אידישן נחת חסידישן נחת וידוע מרז"ל יגעתי ומצאתי תאמין לא יגעתי ומצאתי אל תאמין ובמילא הזכות והחובה מוטל עליו לעשות כל מה שביכולתו אשר בנו שי' יהי' חסיד וההתחלה בזה שיהי' גולה למקום תורה ללמוד בישיבה שלומדים בה תלמוד תורה ביראת שמים...

חותם במכ' שהוא ג"כ ש"ץ, ובודאי למותר להעיר אותו על המנהג הטוב של ישראל ואפילו של גדולי ישראל שהיו ש"ץ, לעבור ולחזור קודם ר"ה ויום הכפורים על התפלות והפיוטים עם פירוש המלות שבהם וגם מדרשות רז"ל ובפרט שכותב ששייך הוא לגזע תרשישים כמ"ש במכתבו ע"ד התחתנותו בגזע החוזה מלובלין הרי צ"ל ג"כ בזה דברים המתאימים בעניני התעוררות של תורת החסידות.
