To the distinguished chassid who fears Hashem,

Rav Menachem Mendel[1], the shochet*,

Greetings and blessings,

The Baal Shem Tov teaches that every detail, even the most insignificant, is an effect of hashgachah pratis*. I will therefore seize the occasion, since this is the first time you write to me, to remind you and underline to you to what point it is important that each man and each woman act concretely, by all possible means, in his entourage, in order to draw close the Jewish hearts to our Father Who is in heaven. Our Sages say, indeed, in the Sifra at the beginning of Parshas Tzav, that one counsels haste only to those who naturally possess this quality.

One can verify concretely to what point Yidden are ready to receive such a message. All depends therefore on the one who transmits it, and our Sages underline that words emanating from the heart penetrate into the heart.

Moreover, your signature specifies that you are a shochet*. Now, in the most simple sense, shechitah* prepares the flesh of an animal or a fowl so that it become the food of a man, who will fuse it with his flesh and his blood, elevating it thus from the animal stage toward the human kingdom[2]. Such is also your moral mission. You must draw the nefesh habahamis* of the Yidden of your entourage, prepare them to elevate themselves toward the stage of the man who is built in the image of Hashem, as the Shnei Luchos HaBris indicates, on page 20b, cited by the Asarah Maamaros, in the maamar* Em Kol Chai, second part, chapter 33.

... ואשתמש בהזדמנות זו - אשר כפי תורת הבעש"ט הרי כל דבר אף פרט קטן הוא בהשגחה פרטית - שהגיעני מכתבו הראשון, לעוררו ולזרזו, נשען על מרז"ל ספרא ר"פ צו, אין מזרזין אלא למזורזין ע"ד ההכרח הכי גדול שכל אחד ואחת מבני ישראל ישפיע בסביבתם לקרב את לבן של ישראל לאבינו שבשמים בכל האופנים האפשרים, והחוש מוכיח אשר לב ישראל ער הוא ואין הדבר תלוי אלא בהמעורר וכמרז"ל דברים היוצאים מן הלב נכנסים אל הלב, ובפרט בראותי בחתימתו שהוא שו"ב, הרי ידוע דרז"ל אין ושחט אלא ומשך, והיינו שכמו שהשחיטה ע"פ פשוט מכשר[ת] את בשר הבהמה והעוף שיהי' ראוי למאכל אדם ולהפך לדם ובשר כבשרו, היינו שממדריגת חי יתעלה הבשר למדריגת מדבר, הנה זהו תפקידו ברוחניות להמשיך את הנפש הבהמית של בני ובנות ישראל, הנמצאים בסביבתו ולהכשירם שיעלו למדריגת אדם, שהוא מל' אדמה לעליון, וכמ"ש בשל"ה דף כ' ע"ב והוא בס' עשרה מאמרות, מאמר אם כל חי, חלק ב' סי' ל"ג.
