Volume 6 · Letter 311

By the grace of Hashem,

12 Elul 5712,

Brooklyn, New York,

Greetings and blessings,

I received with satisfaction your letter of 16 Menachem Av, by which you announce to me that you are preparing to print a sefer*. You join to it the hespedim* which you delivered for my father-in-law, the Rebbe, at the time of the histalkus* and thirty days after it. You solicit my agreement to this publication.

Giving an approbation on a sefer*, especially when it concerns a collection of derush*, is not my role. Moreover, such a practice is not in my habit.

I explained, some time ago, that one cannot contest a derush*. Indeed, when it concerns halachah*, all must adopt the position which is in conformity with absolute truth. Nothing of the sort can be said for derush*. Nevertheless, in halachah*, only the concrete conclusion matters and less the fact that yiras shamayim* preceded chochmah*.

In fact, different texts explain that, during the exile, especially in this period of the heels of Moshiach, it is possible to study Torah in a self-interested manner and, despite this, to arrive at an exact conclusion.

It was not the same in the era of the Beis HaMikdash* or in proximity to it. Then, the proof of the exactitude of a halachah* was obtained when one could say of its author: "Hashem is with him." And, the Name of Hashem employed in this expression is Havayah, Who "was, is, and will be in an identical manner," for He transcends nature, and not Elokim*, the numerical value of which is the same as that of hateva, nature. From this fact, one can say that "both express the opinion of the living Elokim*."

It is not so for derush*. Indeed, this must elicit the fear of Hashem our Elokim*. The conclusion of every study must therefore satisfy this principle.

You will consult the Shulchan Aruch of the Alter Rebbe, Orach Chaim chapter 429, end of paragraph 4, which says: "One nowadays comments on Midrash according to the actuality of the moment." You will also consult chapter 529 of the Kuntres Acharon. And, you know what the Sifri says: "If you wish to learn to know Him Who, by His word, created the world, learn Midrash."

As for the contents of what you write concerning my father-in-law, the Rebbe, I thank you for your precision and for the research which you have done among the hespedim*. For tzaddikim* are in the image of their Creator, and that is in particular true for a leader of the Jewish people. There is, in every generation, someone who occupies the functions of Moshe, who himself explained: "I stand between Hashem and you."

It is said, concerning Hashem, that "the summit of knowledge is the awareness that one cannot know Him." For all that, each one mentions ceaselessly the Name of Hashem, as Torah Or explains in Parshas Vayeira, page 14b, which specifies: "That is the reason for which children also have knowledge of the existence of Hashem." You will consult this text, which makes reference to the luminary.

Now, it is the same for tzaddikim* and the leaders of every generation. It is, on the one hand, impossible to perceive what they really are. For all that, the children themselves know them.

When I went to the tziyun* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, I mentioned your name and that of the members of your family, as you asked me, for the satisfaction of your needs, in conformity with what you say in your letter. May Hashem grant that each of us announce only good news, always and every day.

With my blessing that you be inscribed and sealed for a good year,

Enclosed are your texts in return.

I also enclose the report of the words which were spoken on the Shabbos during which the month was blessed.
