To the directors of Yeshivas Lubavitch of Lod,

may Hashem grant you long life,

Greetings and blessings,

A) I duly received your letters of 13 and 22 Menachem Av. According to information which I just received from Paris, a discussion took place there with Mr. Doctor Shapiro. He said he had already conversed with Mr. Pasman concerning the professional school and that he had to speak with him again on this subject. Apparently Mr. Pasman himself was outside Eretz Yisroel, and that is how they met.

The Joint will probably finance a professional school for you and for ... If your dossier is in good order, one can hope that priority be granted to you. It seems, nevertheless, that the Joint does not dispose of an amount sufficiently important to give you the entire subvention necessary for this professional school. This organization will be able to stagger the subventions. Of course, these will be granted, in priority, to the project which will best suit them.

I await your good news.

B) I said that you must maintain the present organization of your yeshivah*, that is, to know that it is a yeshivah* and not a Talmud Torah. I was led to formulate this remark for the following reasons:

1. It seems that you have recently modified your letterhead by indicating that you also accept younger talmidim*.

2. I had knowledge of a project to take under your direction the Talmud Torah of the Oholei Yosef Yitzchok network. I therefore adopted, on this subject, the following position. Even in normal mode of functioning, and a fortiori when one observes you attentively, one must be very prudent and not lend to think that the Talmud Torah plays the essential role, while the study of Gemara occupies only little time, which proves the weak quality of this teaching. You will understand what I wish to say.

You are right to say that it is easier to influence different categories of children if one gives them a good education from their earliest age, but there has always been a difference between what should be and what is possible to obtain. One must take this into account also in this case.

Obviously, I do not wish to say that you must send back the children who have already been accepted, chas veshalom*. Nor do I ask you to refuse the small ones in the future and content yourselves only with the older ones. I wish only to tell you that the qualitative and even quantitative increase must lead to recruiting talmidim* who, evidently, indeed belong to a yeshivah*.

All this will be specified in accordance with the conditions which you will appreciate on the spot. It will be incumbent upon you to pronounce yourselves, in each case. May Hashem grant you success, so that you take the good decision, which will bring you a supernatural success.

C) On this occasion, I would like to underline to you yet again the importance of occupying yourselves with the children of Yemen. You cannot imagine the great good which will result from it.

D) In these days, Mr. Yitzchok Elmaleh, a communal leader of Casablanca, will visit the Holy Land, with Rav Toledano of Meknes and other personalities. They are men of an irreproachable yiras shamayim*, who support the Oholei Yosef Yitzchok institutions in Morocco.

You will have Mr. Elmaleh visit your institution. You will honor these persons, for, our Sages say, "it is a mitzvah* to honor those who accomplish a mitzvah*." You will surely take counsel, for all this, with Agudas Chassidei Chabad, so that this action be organized in the best manner and that it bring an effective result, to the full extent possible.

E) The matter of the construction of a barrack on the roof has surely known a continuation. I was satisfied to read, in your letter, that you are beginning to be less cramped. You have also solicited a loan for the acquisition of construction materials. If you enlarge the receptacle here below, the brachah* which Hashem will grant you will be considerably increased.

F) When you have news, you will please communicate it to me. I thank you in advance.

P.S.: I enclose to you an extract of the words spoken during the Shabbos in the course of which the month of Elul was blessed. Without doubt you will disseminate it among the talmidim* in the fitting manner.

שלום וברכה!

מאשר הנני קבלת מכ' מי"ג וכ"ב מנ"א, וכפי הידיעה שקבלתי זה עתה מפריז, הנה דברו שם עם מר ד"ר שפירא, והוא אמר שכבר דיבר עם מר פסמן בנוגע לבי"ס למלאכה, ויעורר עתה עוד הפעם (כנראה אשר מר פסמן הי' בחו"ל ושם התראה עמו). והנה כפי הנראה יתעסק הדזוינט בבי"ס למלאכה בשבילם ובשביל... ואם יהי' אצלם מסודר הענין כדבעי, אזי יש תקוה שיהי' להם דין קדימה. כפי הנראה אין להדזוינט תקציב כ"כ גדול ליתן את כל האמצעים הדרושים בשביל בי"ס למלאכה ולכן יתנו קמעא קמעא ומי שיישר בעיניהם יותר, הרי בטח יזכה קודם, ולבשו"ט אחכה.

ב) מה שכתבתי שיש לשמור על ציור הישיבה שלהם, לדעת שהיא ישיבה ולא תלמוד תורה, הנה מה שעורר אותי לחשש זה הוא: א) שנראה בהגליונות שנתוספו בזמן האחרון, שגיל התלמידים הוא צעיר ביותר. ב) מה ששמעתי שיש סברא להכניס את הת"ת דאהלי"י תחת הנהלתם, ולכן הודעתי את דעתי בזה, שאפילו בשנים כתקונם ובפרט שמביטים אחריהם בשבעה עינים, יש להזהר שלא לתת פתחון פה לאמר שענין הת"ת שלהם הוא העיקר ולימוד גפ"ת הוא המעט בכמות, ובמילא זה ראי' ג"כ על האיכות וד"ל. בטח צודקים הם בטענותם שבנקל יותר להשפיע על כמה סוגים ילדים אם יתחילו לחנכם בחינוך הרצוי בגיל רך, אבל תמיד הי' חילוק בין הראוי והאפשר ובמילא גם במצב זה יש להתחשב עם זה. פשיטא שאין כוונתי שיפטרו ח"ו את התלמידים שכבר נתקבלו, ואפילו על להבא אין דעתי שאין לקבל כלל תלמידים קטנים, אלא אך גדולים, וכוונתי היא רק זה, שהריבוי באיכות ואפי' הריבוי בכמות צ"ל בתלמידים כאלו שיעידו שזו ישיבה, ופרטים בזה ה"ז תלוי בהתנאים על אתר, ובמילא עליהם להחליט בכל פעם ופעם בזה, והשי"ת יצליחם שיכוונו אל הכוונה שבד"מ תהי' בזה הצלחה למעלה מדרך הטבע.

ג) בהזדמנות זו הנני להדגיש עוד הפעם את גודל הענין מה שמתעסקים בילדי תימן, והתועליות שבזה אין לשער מראש.

ד) ימים אלו בטח יעלו לאה"ק ת"ו - ע"מ לחזור - העסקן מר יצחק אלמליח מקסבלנקה עם הרב טול[י]דנ[ו] דמכנז ועוד, הנ"ל הם חרדים ביותר ומתעסקים לטובת מוסדות אהלי"י אשר במרוקה... בטח יראו לו את המוסד שלהם, וכדאי לכבדם ומרז"ל מצוה לפרסם עושי מצוה, ובטח יתייעצו בזה עם אגודת חב"ד, למען יהי' הדבר מסודר בענין שיביא תועלת היותר גדולה.

ה) בטח ישנם כבר אצלם המשך בנוגע לבנין הצריף על הגג, ונהניתי לראות במכתבם שנרגש התחלה לרחבות - ברייטקייט - שנוסף על הנ"ל בקשו הלואה על חמרי בנין ג"כ, וכשיגדילו הכלי למטה הרי בודאי ישפיעו כ"פ ככה מלמעלה.

ו) כשיהי' להם חדשות בטח יודיעו ות"ח מראש.
