To the directors of the Yeshivah of Lod,

To the directors of the Yeshivah Toras Emes[1],

to whom Hashem will grant long life,

Greetings and blessings,

You have surely received my preceding letters and you will please respond to them.

I will repeat here the following points, which I have already transmitted to you[2] orally, through the Rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav M. Gourary[3].

I have wished, for a long time, that the aptitudes and the qualities of the students of the yeshivos* be evaluated, as concerns the revealed part of the Torah and Chassidus*, in conformity with the practice which has always existed in the Lubavitch yeshivos*. Examinations regularly took place there, and one had the habit of holding them during the school vacations.

I propose and I request that such examinations take place in the yeshivos* of the Holy Land.

Obviously, the examinations will be discreet, that is to say, one will not invite outside personalities to them.

The examinations will be confided to two committees, one for the revealed part of the Torah and the other for Chassidus*. The teacher of the Yeshivah of Lod and that of Toras Emes, for each of these subjects, will belong to the corresponding committee. There will also be a third person, designated by the two others.

It is clear that these examinations concern only the students of the great classes or those who study in an independent manner.

Obviously, these examinations do not substitute for the passing examinations, since they address themselves only to the greatest classes and have as their goal, as I have said, to determine the true level of each student and his aptitudes for the revealed part of the Torah and for Chassidus*.

I hope that you will consecrate to them the month of Tishrei, during which the time of study is less strict. May Hashem grant that you know success.

You will confirm to me immediately the reception of this letter. You will name as soon as possible the members of the committee and you will let me know it at once.

I have asked the association of Chabad chassidim* to organize all this and to make the link between the two yeshivos*. It is, of course, preferable that all the examinations be completed during the month of Tishrei.

I await your good news and I conclude in wishing you to be inscribed and sealed for a good year, to know success in your sacred mission.

מכתבי הקודמים בטח קבלו ויענו עליהם.

אף שכבר מסרתי על ידי הרה"ח וו"ח אי"א נו"מ עוסק בצרכי ציבור וכו' הר"מ שי' גורארי', בכל זה באתי להעלות הדברים על הכתב, והם:

זה מכבר חפצי ורצוני לברר כשרונות תלמידי הישיבות ומעלותיהם, הן בלימוד הנגלה הן בלימוד החסידות. וכאשר הי' זה מכבר בסדר כל ישיבות ליובאוויטש, אשר מזמן לזמן היו עורכים בחינות התלמידים, והנהוג בזה שהיו עורכים בחינות אלו בין הזמנים.

לכן הצעתי ובקשתי אשר יערכו בחינות כאלו גם בהישיבות באה"ק ת"ו.

מובן מעצמו שבחינות אלו תהיינה חשאיות, היינו בלא הזמנות אנשים מבחוץ וכו'.

והבוחנים יהיו שני ועדים, ועד בחינה בנגלה, וועד בחינה בחסידות. בכל ועד משני אלה יכנס הר"מ דנגלה או דחסידות דישיבת לוד ודישיבת תו"א, ואחד נוסף עליהם שיסכימו עליו שניהם.

ומובן מעצמו שבחינה זו ענינה רק בהנוגע לתלמידי הכתות העליונות והלומדים בפ"ע.

מובן ג"כ שאין בחינה זה באה במקום הבחינות הנדרשות כדי להעלות התלמידים מכתה לכתה, כי אינה אלא בשביל הכתות היותר גבוהות, וכנ"ל בשביל לדעת מצב האמתי של התלמידים וכשרונותיהם בנגלה דתורה ובחסידות.

תקותי שינצלו לזה את ימי חודש תשרי הבע"ל, כיון שבטח בלאו הכי אין הסדרים נשמרים כ"כ, ויהי רצון שיהי' בהצלחה.

בטח יאשרו קבלת מכתבי זה תיכף, וימהרו ג"כ במינוי האנשים להועדים ויודיעוני גם עד"ז בהקדם.

בקשתי גם את הנהלת אגו"ח לסדר את הענינים ולתווך בין שתי הישיבות. ולמותר להעיר אשר מהנכון שכל הבחינות תגמרנה עוד בחודש תשרי.

המחכה לבשורות טובות וחותם בברכת כתיבה וחתימה טובה והצלחה בעבודתם בקדש.
