You will consult specialist doctors regarding Yom Kippur. Our Torah, a Torah of life, specifies that it must be so. It breathes life not only in the future world, but also in this one.
If the doctor asks you to eat, you will recite a brachah*, in doing so. Now, the brachah* is a means of revealing Divinity and elevating matter. For this, one must consume the food in an effective manner. Thought or intention are in no way sufficient.

... ובנוגע ליוהכ"פ - הנה בודאי יתנהג ע"פ הוראת רופאים מומחים, שזוהי דעת תורתנו, תורת חיים - לא רק בעוה"ב אלא גם בעוה"ז. ואם היא ע"פ הוראת רופא, הרי אז מברכין על אכילה זו, שענין הברכות הוא - המשכת אלקות והעלאת הניצוצות, שנעשים דוקא ע"י אכילה, וא"א ע"י מח' וכוונות גרידא.
