Greetings and blessings,

I respond to your letter. I am surprised that you do not say a word of the influence which you exercise on your community, in order to strengthen Torah there and to diffuse Judaism. You surely do not forget that, in the end, such is indeed the finality of your rabbinic function.

Certainly, this function also permits you to earn your living, but this is only accessory in relation to what has just been said. It is doubtless unnecessary to say more.

Moreover, it is clear that your action must concentrate essentially on the good chinuch* which can be dispensed, both to children and to adults. Most fundamental point, you must explain to each one that concrete action is determining, that it is necessary to put the mitzvos* into practice in daily existence.

במענה על מכתבו... לפלא שאינו מזכיר מאומה בענין השפעתו בקהלתו, בהחזקת התורה והפצת היהדות, אשר בטח אינו שוכח אשר סו"ס זהו תכלית העיקר של משרת הרבנות, וענין הפרנסה שבזה הוא טפל בערך לתכלית הנ"ל, והאריכות בזה בטח אך למותר, ומובן ג"כ שעיקר הפעולה היא בעניני חינוך הכשר, הן של הקטנים והן של הגדולים, ועיקר העיקרים להסבירם אשר העיקר הוא המעשה בפועל, היינו קיום המצות בפועל ממש בחיים היום יומיים...
