Greetings and blessings,

I would like to bring a precision. Many chassidim* make a bad interpretation of my position, according to which one must not leave France[1]. They think that my preoccupation is to assure the continuity of the institutions existing there, to guarantee their future by sacrificing the personal well-being of these persons. This conception does not at all correspond to reality.

I think that such migrations can be damaging spiritually and, in parallel, not bring material comfort[2]. And, I have unfortunately been able to observe, until now, that this is indeed the case. For the moment, I see no element permitting one to think that this situation is called to change in the near future. I am therefore surprised that some wish to move at all costs.

Each one therefore underlines to me, in the letter which he writes me, that his departure will not call into question the existence of our institutions, on site. In function of what has just been said, you will understand that this has no incidence on the question which is posed. Indeed, it concerns, in this case, avoiding what could cause harm to him who undertakes this voyage to go settle elsewhere.

...וזאת למודעי, אשר כנראה שכמה מאנ"ש טועים הם ומפרשים דעתי נגד העתקה מצרפת שכוונתי היא לתועלת קיום המוסדות ולשמירתם ולוותר על התועלת הפרטית של האישים, ואין זה מתאים כלל וכלל, כי דעתי, ולדאבוני ראיתי זה במוחש עד עתה, שבההעתקה הרי כמעט רובם ככולם האט מען אנגעווארן ברוחניות ולעו"ז האט מען ניט פארדינט בגשמיות ואינני רואה עדיין לע"ע סיבות שישתנה זה בעתיד הקרוב, ובמילא תמיהני על אלו הרוצים בהעתקה דוקא, ובקשר לכל הנ"ל הנה מה שמדגיש כל אחד במכתבו שבהעתקתו לא יהי' היזק להמוסדות שלנו, הנה אינו שייך להענין, כיון שהחשש הוא במניעת היזק מההעתקה להנוסע והמעתיק גופא.
