Greetings and blessings,

I respond to your letter of 3 Cheshvan, in which I read with pleasure in what manner you study the revealed part of the Torah and Chassidus*. Our Sages say that one must elevate oneself in all that touches on holiness. You will therefore intensify this study, quantitatively and especially qualitatively, that is to say, you will conduct it with more verve, ardor, and depth. As you know, our Sages also say that "he who makes efforts knows success."

You inform me of the proximity of your birthday[1]. You will therefore be called up to the Torah, on the day of reading nearest to this date, just before it. You will also recite Tehillim*. The Hayom Yom says, on the date of 11 Nissan[2]:

"On the day of his birthday, a man must isolate himself, recall the past and meditate on it. Each time that a reparation or repentance will be necessary, he will introduce them."

You will therefore take a few moments to isolate yourself. You will then study a chassidic* discourse and you will take a good resolution for the year which comes. This must be within your reach, that is to say, within your means, in function of the organization of the yeshivah*[3]. It will concern a practice linked to the Torah and to the fear of Hashem. You will be able to consult on this subject your spiritual guide[4].

You ask me whether you should put on the tefillin* of Rabbeinu Tam[5]. For the moment, it suffices that you concentrate in putting on those of Rashi[6].

With my blessing to study the Torah with fear of Hashem and in a fruitful manner,

במענה על מכתבו מג' חשון, נהניתי לקרות בו מסדר לימודו בנגלה ובחסידות, ובטח ע"פ פסק רז"ל דמעלין בקדש יוסיף בזה בכמות והעיקר באיכות היינו בהתמדה בשקידה ובעומק הלימוד וידוע מרז"ל יגעת ומצאת.

ובמענה על הודעתו מיום הולדת שלו הבע"ל, הנה ביום הקריאה בס"ת הסמוך לו מלפניו יעלה לתורה וכן יאמר ספר תהלים, וכמובא בהיום יום י"א ניסן אשר "ביום ההולדת, על האדם להתבודד, ולהעלות זכרונותיו ולהתבונן בהם, והצריכים תקון ותשובה ישוב ויתקנם" יקח לו איזה רגעים להתבודדות, אשר ברגעים האלו ילמוד איזה מאמר של דא"ח ויקבל החלטה טובה על שנתו הבע"ל אשר צריכה להיות בערכו, היינו ענין שהוא לפי כחו מתאים לסדרי הישיבה וענין הכרוך בתורה וביראת שמים, ויוכל להתייעץ בזה עם המשפיע שלהם.

ובנוגע לשאלתו אם להניח תפילין דר"ת, הנה לע"ע די שיזהר מהיסח הדעת בהנחת תפילין דרש"י.
