Paris 17/XI My dear Rabbi!

I received today a letter from Mr. Liberman and I hasten to tell you what he writes to us.

The building of Szmotkin in Warsaw where my father had been living with the family was completely destroyed by fire. Thank Hashem, they are all safe and sound.

In the fire, they lost all their belongings, so that, as it appears, they have nothing to cover themselves with.

(They had the courage to save the manuscripts. The library remained in Otwock.)

Since then, they have been living at the home of Mr. Hirtz Gurarie.

I am sure, my dear Rabbi, that you are doing everything in your means to come to their aid and especially to get them out as soon as possible, given their situation.

Paris 17/XI/1939 Mon cher Rabbin !

J'ai reçu aujourd'hui une lettre de Mr. Liberman et je me dépêche de vous dire ce qu'il nous écrit.

L'immeuble de Szmotkin à Varsovie où avait habité mon père avec la famille a été complètement détruit par un incendie. Dieu soit loué, qu'ils sont tous sains et saufs.

Dans l'incendie ils ont perdu tous leurs effets, de façon que, comme il paraît, ils n'ont rien à se couvrir.

(Ils ont eu le courage de sauver les manuscripts. La bibliothèque est restée à Otwock.)

Depuis lors ils habitent chez Mr. Hirz Gurarie.

Je suis sûr, mon cher Rabbin, que vous faites tout ce qui est en vos moyens pour leur venir à l'aide et surtout pour les faire sortir le plutôt possible, vu leur situation.

רב יקר!

קבלתי היום מכתב ממר ליברמאן, והנני נחפז למסור תוכנו לכבודו.

הבית של שמוטקין בוורשא, שבו גרו אבי עם המשפחה, נהרס לגמרי ע"י שרפה גדולה. ברוך השם, שהם כולם בריאים ושלמים.

בשריפה נאבדו כל חפציהם, כך, שכנראה אין להם עתה כסות בקרה.

(הי' להם אומץ-הלב להציל את הכתבים. הספריה נשארה באטוואצק).

מאז הם גרים אצל מר הירש גורארי'.

הנני בטוח, רב יקר, שהנכם עושים כל מה שבאפשרותכם לבוא לעזרתם ובעיקר להוציא אותם בהקדם האפשרי, לאור מצבם.
