Greetings and blessings,

I respond to your letter, by which you transmit to me the request of the one who solicits a blessing to have boys.

It would be good for him to concentrate his efforts on the love of his fellow, the love of Torah, and the love of Hashem. Indeed, the books of Kabbalah and Chassidus* explain that, in giving birth to love[1] in its spiritual dimension, one can also give birth to a son[2], in a physical manner.

One must therefore strengthen and consolidate love in its spiritual bearing. For this, one must meditate on the greatness of Hashem. The Rambam explains, in his Hilchos Yesodei HaTorah, at the beginning of the second chapter, that one thus obtains a long life, long days, good years, and also boys, in the physical sense.

In consequence, and without making it a vow, this man, until his wife gives birth to a boy, will contribute one franc or two to tzedakah*, each weekday, before the morning prayer. It would be good for this tzedakah* to be devoted to the food and drink of poor students.

When he has a son, he will give him the name of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, the Tzaddik upon whom the world rests and whose merit protects us, that is to say, Yosef Yitzchak.

May Hashem grant that you may announce to me good news on this subject.

במענה על מכתבו, בו מודיע בקשת... להתברך בבנים זכרים חו"ק:

הנה מהנכון שיוסיף הנ"ל אומץ באהבת ישראל, אהבת התורה ואהבת השם יתברך, וכידוע בספרי הקבלה והחסידות, אשר הולדת אהבה ברוחניות ה"ה סגולה להולדת בן בגשמיות, ובמילא מובן אשר קיום וחיזוק האהבה ברוחניות, והוא ע"י התבוננות בגדולתו ית' כלשון הרמב"ם (הל' יסוה"ת רפ"ב) ה"ז ממשיך חיים ארוכים לאורך ימים ושנים טובות לבנים זכרים בגשמיות,

ולכן בלי נדר עד אחר שתלד זוגתו תחי' בן זכר יתן בכל יום מימות החול קודם תפלת שחרית פרנק או שנים לצדקה, ומהנכון שתהי' צדקה הקשורה באכילה ושתי' של תלמידים עניים, וכשיולד לו בן זכר יתן לו שם ע"ש כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע יסו"ע, שהוא יוסף יצחק, והשי"ת יזכה את כת"ר לבשר בשו"ט בכל הנ"ל...
