To the directors of the Talmud Torah of Kfar Chabad,
May Hashem grant them long life,
Greetings and blessings,
I was questioned regarding a child who wishes to be enrolled in the Talmud Torah. I was told that he is strongly motivated, although he is not yet five years old. He will be, however, in a few months, and if, from a sanitary point of view, the doctor gives his agreement, this[1] should not constitute an obstacle.
You will also consult the laws of the study of the Torah of the Alter Rebbe, at the beginning of the first chapter, in the paragraph beginning with "the fifth year." Certainly, it is said there: "at home[2]." Nevertheless, you know that the custom has been modified since then.
At that time, indeed, children were entrusted to a teacher when they were six or seven years complete. It is not the same in these recent generations[3]. You will also consult, in the book, the talk[4] of the summer of 5700[5], starting from paragraph 5.
It is clear that what is said there[6] does not apply to each one in an identical manner, since the Tzemach Tzedek was then three years old.
Perhaps you have particular reasons[7]. In this case, you will kindly let me know them.

פנו אלי בבקשה בענין הילד... הרוצה להתקבל להת"ת, וכפי שהודיעוני משתוקק לזה אף שכפי הנראה עדיין אינו בן חמש שנה, אבל כיון שאין חסר אלא איזה חדשים, הרי אם הרופא מסכים לזה מצד בריאות הנ"ל, אין החדשים האלו מעכבים (יעוין ג"כ בהלכות ת"ת לרבינו הזקן רפ"א ד"ה בשנה חמישית כו'. ואף שמסיים שם בביתו, הנה בכלל ידוע שהמנהג מאז ועד עתה בזה נשתנה, כי אז הי' המנהג להוליך אצל מלמד תינוקות כשהי' בן שש או שבע שלימות משא"כ בדורות האחרונים, ויעוין ג"כ בספר שיחת קיץ ת"ש עמוד ס"ה ואילך, ואף שפשיטא שאין זה הוראה לרבים כיון שהי' הצ"צ כבן שלש). ואולי יש להם טעמים מיוחדים, ומטובם להודיעני.
