To the Rav and tzaddik*, chassid* of an illustrious lineage,

Rav Baruch[1],

Greetings and blessings,

I duly received, although somewhat belatedly, your letter of 5 Tishrei and the photograph that was enclosed with it[2], regarding which you make an analysis, asking whether it is authentic. It has already been published several times and various opinions have been expressed about it.

You will consult Demuyos Gedolei HaChassidus*[3] of Rav Charantski, published in Tel Aviv in 5705[4], on page 35. You will also find there this photograph, which I am returning to you with the present letter. What I was asking you in my letter was, in fact, the holy manuscript[2] which I have been told is in your possession. If you would send me at least a copy of it, I would be grateful to you.

You tell me that you possess a holy manuscript of the Baal Shem Tov, a letter addressed to the Toldos[5]. It would be necessary to verify whether it is the one printed at the beginning of the first volume of the HaTamim* anthology. The corresponding manuscript is in the collection of my father-in-law, the Rebbe. If it is this letter, it can therefore only be a copy, coming from another source.

Moreover, you will also find in the book of Rav Charantski, previously cited, other photographs that you mention in your letter.

You will find enclosed a postage-paid envelope for the shipping costs.

קבלתי מכתבו מה' תשרי, אף כי באיחור זמן קצת עם התמונה המוסג"ב, ובמה שהאריך בענין התמונה והשקו"ט אם נכונה היא, הנה התמונה נתפרסמה כבר כ"פ ויש כמה דיעות ופלוגתות בהנוגע לה, ויעוין בספר דמויות גדולי החסידות (להרב שצרנסקי, נדפס בתל אביב שנת תש"ה, עמוד ל"ה) שגם שם נמצאת תמונה זו. ומוחזרה פה התמונה.

ומה שבקשתי במכתבי, הי' זה ע"ד המכתבי קדש שאמרו לי שנמצאים תחת ידו, שאם עכ"פ יואיל לשלוח העתק מהם, ת"ח מראש.

מה שכותב שיש תחת ידו עצם כתי"ק הבעש"ט מה שכתב להתולדות, הנה צריך בירור אם זהו המכתב הנדפס בקובץ התמים חלק א' בראשיתו, אשר עצם גוף כתי"ק המכתב נמצא באוסף הכתבי יד של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע, ואם כן הוא הרי אי אפשר שיהי' אלא העתק ממנו במקום אחר, ובדא"ג הנה בהספר של הרב שצרנסקי הנ"ל נמצאים ג"כ עוד מהתמונות שמזכיר במכתבו.
